I have been advised before by a very well known Volvo mechanic that 5W30 is far too thin for these T5 engines and can over time cause the bottom ends to fail.
He apparently rebuilt 13 bottom ends on ST's last year using 30 weight oil. Advised to change to 10W40 as soon as possible so that's personally what I run in mine.

Like any diesels if you do the mileage, or at least a few long runs a month you probably won't have issues, the earlier 1.6D had issue but I think the D2 is more problem free |

http://forums.t5d5.org/topic/33713-o...comment-305270 Having dealt with both Tim and Volvo numerous times I know who I'd rather listen to and it's certainly not Volvo. EDIT: Sorry OP - I posted comment 11 in the wrong thread, this was meant to be in the T5 one, sorry!

As we know if you modify a car you have to change other things as well to compliment the new spec (brakes, suspension) I guess its the same with the oil. But in standard spec I wouldn't be too worried. If you go too thick you risk problems with the hydraulic tappets and valve clearances.

It's personal preference though, each to their own and all

Ok thanks for clarification. After reading that I agree it looks more like "personal opinion" rather that scientifically proven fact (not saying its wrong though!) but I dont know enough to take my own mind with it so I will just play sheep and stay with 5W30 for now :P

I think the D2 engine is great, there isn't loads of power but what it has is just where you need it for everyday use. If your foot is constantly buried in the carpet then you'd be better off looking at other engine options. |
