Default Rear seat entertainment on 2013 XC90

Hi everyone,
Just about to buy my 2nd XC90 having ran our first one (2003) into the ground. I dare say more miles will be added by a new owner but I wanted to switch out.

Anyway, I've opted for the R-Design and with it comes the RSE system (although currently doesn't have the DVD player but the dealer is going to sort it).

Wondering though if there's any point in them getting a DVD player if I could replace it with a media player or even output from iPhone/iPad to the AV input that way?

The dealer are claiming the replacement DVD will be £900, if that's the case (I doubt it actually is) then I'd be as well having them knock that off the price and then doing the DIY thing myself.

Thoughts?

I'm sure that someone one here was selling the DVD player a while ago. Might be worth looking through the for sale section.

It was the one in the centre console. I think this will be the one that you need.

I think you've missed my point/question? Dealer will be getting one but wondered if another media player would be a better option.

The RSE screens are controlled by CAN bus data from the DVD player.
You can connect an external AV source to the DVD player but not to the screens directly

So having the DVD player is a prerequisite for the external source.

Get the missing DVD player fitted

I meant you could get them to knock off £900 and source your own DVD player for much less

I replaced the Volvo screens with aftermarket ones from Amazon, and feed them from an iPod video in the glovebox.
Total cost under £100

I have the 8" screens, as swiss said they are a nightmare to hook up to due to them using canbus for power control (thanks for that information by the way).

I ended up junking the internals and replacing with 8" HDMI screens. Wasnt an easy thing to fit and needed rewiring, but I now have RSE on all three screens and have a button that switches the RTI screen between the Raspberry Pi (media player) and navigation.

I wouldnt recommend this approach, but it at least means I have much improved picture quality in the rears. I also have music playback (controlled via a small bluetooth remote), iPlayer etc and the Raspberry Pi also has power management so will wait for upto 6 minutes before shutting down safely.
