XC90 side steps and MPG..

Hi chaps, would like your guys input to some questions please.

I have owned our xc90 2010 r design d5 for about 5 weeks now and so far so good but I would just like to check somthing:

1. Can you get xc90 r design side steps OR is there a guide to make them fit? I have seen a lot that I like but they all state they don't fit the r design due to the metal cover?

having a very young family they struggle to get in and out of the car so trying to add a set will help me out.

2. How many miles do you guys get to a full tank of diesel? not to worried about MPG figures as not worked any out but I am seeing a full tank (about £85) will get me about 300 to 350 miles? this is some town driving and A road, are you guys sitting in this range?

1. The sidesteps do not fit the R-Design due to the special R-Design aluminium sill panel

2. My XC90 D5 diesel regularly returns an average of 10 L/100 km, which is 28.2 MPG, in combined motorway and town driving. I can bring it down to 8 L/100km (35 MPG) with motorway crusing.

The D5 R-Design has a 68 litre fuel tank

At 12L/100km you get 566km, which is 351 miles.
At 11L/100km you get 618km, which is 384 miles.
At 10L/100km you get 680km, which is 422 miles.
At 9L/100km you get 755km, which is 469 miles.
At 8L/100km you get 850km, which is 528 miles.

Driving these vehicles hard, especially when cold, WILL increase the fuel consumption a lot.

Sounds like you are averaging around 12L/100km which means a lot of town driving or heavy footed driving, or time for new filters and oil, or all of the above...

Looks like you are stamping to hard on the loud pedal. My last 14 plate R Design managed at least 38mpg around town and on a nice steady cruise at motorway speeds,,, 70-75mph regular got back 50mpg according to the on board trip computer. Tickle the throttle and you will get decent mpg, stamp down on it, and hope to have shares in an oil company. As for the side steps forget them on the R Design. Prior to the R Design I had a 06 xc90 lux with side bars. Wife hated them, always managed to clean them with her white jeans....

It's possible to fit spacers and longer bolts to the side steps to allow them to clear the aluminium sill cover.

As per the post above they can be made to fit with spacers and longer bolts, certainly the bolt holes are still present even though the r-design isnt side step friendly. As for the mileage on a full tank I get 450-500 on a full tank, as did my previous XC90 so I suspect either something is wrong with yours or your driving it too hard.

I owned 3 MK 1 XC90's and 300 - 350 miles per tank was about my average on all 3, (mainly town driving) on long runs it improved and could get 450 to the tank and once got 500 on a long return journey.

I have a strong suspicion that had to brimmed the tank and calculated the actual MPG - you may have found you got substantially lower figures than the computer was saying... The only XC90 that could get close to 50 MPG was the early 163 BHP E3 manual gearbox cars.

On board computer isn't exactly known to be accurate but this was mine last week after filling up after 3000 miles of ownership and should go higher next time I fill the tank

Yes but that is based on your recent driving, exactly how recent is unclear....

And if you filled up and then reset the range display, and then coasted down a hill using almost no fuel, the range display shows an incredibly high value as your current consumption since reset is so low.

You'd have to keep that driving style up for the entire trip to reach that forecasted range....

If you're read what I wrote you would have seen it was for the 3000 miles that I have travelled since owning the XC90. The trip was set to zero when I bought the car and hasn't been touched since
