Default wheel bearing issue

Hello

I have a noise when turning left at speed, which I understand is likely the wheel bearing on the driver's side. There is no noise when in a straight line.

is that a costly job to fix?

I need to do a long run down south next week, likely 400 mile trip but in a straight line, all motorway. Will the car hopefully be ok or is I something I need to get fixed urgently?

The chances are it may be ok if it is a wheel bearing, but you haven't really nailed that as a certainty yet. It could be a CV joint.

However, we'll assume it is a bearing, and I have to say.. even though I've driven with noisy wheel bearings before, its always been relatively local driving. I'm not so sure I'd be up for taking a gamble on a 400 mile run, straight line or not.

The bearing change is not a big deal for a relatively competent mechanic, and obviously if you're doing it yourself the parts themselves won't break the bank. If you need to take it to a garage though, I'd ask for a price, don't let them open end the job.

Last but not least, try and ascertain that you do indeed have a worn wheel bearing, because if you take it to a garage and the new bearing doesn't solve the problem your costs start to escalate. As I said above, it could well be a CV joint.

As I've been writing this I've been thinking.. don't risk that 400 mile trip. It could end up costing you a lot more than a bearing change..

The first thing to do is check how tight the driveshaft nut is, they seem to have a habit of working loose.

My front offside wheel bearing went last year. It started as a whine when cornering at speeds above about 30mph. At that stage I couldn't detect any play in the wheel with the normal jack it up, grab the wheel at 6 and 12 and try to wobble it, I did detect vibration using the trick others have put on here,- jack it up then spin the wheel with your fingers resting lightly on the suspension spring, the wear can be felt as a vibration in the spring. The car went for quite a lot of miles after that until the problem was becoming a constant growl even in a straight line, so that initial whine on cornering isn't a cause to panic.
I don't know what the replacement cost was as I had the front shocks and mountings done at the same time. I do know that my mechanic had some issues getting the right bearing for my car, even using the car's reg his supplier brought three variations before they got the right one, this doesn't totally surprise me as it seems Volvo do some upgrades under the skin without changing the model.

Having said that would I do a 400 mile trip in it? Well when mine was going we did use the wife's car to go on holiday instead of the V70, it seemed the sensible thing to do. If it's only just started going you might be OK for 400 miles but if you've got a choice (2nd car, train etc) I wouldn't and if you do I'd be sure to have some breakdown cover in place.

just an update on this, as my mechanic has had a look at it. Turns out the wheel bearings are fine, but I was low on power steering fluid and that was making the groaning noise when turning. Topped back up and its ok now. Cheers all.
