Quote:
1) Put a suitable socket on the crank bolt (or nut). 2) Find something to extend the ratchet handle, so that it is braced against the ground. 3) Bump the engine with the starter motor (may help to take the plugs out first).

If it's the front crank seal or oil pump seal and gasket, the parts are around £30 total and add about 30 minutes to a timing belt job.
Having the correct tool or equivalent sized socket to install the crank seal helps enormously though. Even though it's on my D5, you can get an idea of the job in my video here.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I’ll give them a call in the morning, but to be honest with the other parts I need to change and sort out on the car, I don’t think it’s worth it. Cut my losses and buy a lower mileage one with better service history. I think this one was a bit neglected the last couple of years and I don’t have any history so was a bit of a spur of the moment purchase.
Now I’m deciding on what to get, another T5 V70, V70r or the V50 T5. Just trying to find the right one more local. There seem to be loads up Birmingham and above but very little down here. |

So they checked it out, and the leak is indeed coming out of the crank seal at the timing belt. They would charge £350 to do the timing belt and seal, however they initial said it would be potentially piston rings. I did tell them about the PCV system, and the issue is they could fix the seal, however I still need to get it home and that could blow the seal again.
Additionally they found an oil leak on the other side of the engine, and also a gearbox oil leak. Someone in the past did a bodge job on the cooling system behind the engine as they said they saw silicone back there so another issue I wasn’t aware of. In the end I decided to scrap it as I also had exhaust to sort, control arms, tyres and potentially some shocks on the back too so when I totalled it up it wasn’t worth it. Cut my losses and got rid of it. I did have a look at a 1999 V70 P1 T5 with 155k on the clock, but had very little service history, inside was gross and it seems one of the previous owners was a bit of a boy racer as it had samco hoses everywhere, Rico tune, potentially and Hieco exhaust and amp and subs in the back. The inside was nasty as it was last owned by a decorator and paint everywhere, splits in the seats and the steering wheel trim was non existent. I have raised a topic in the relevant year thread in case anyone is interested for spares. https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...17#post2581617 Now on the lookout for another T5... Best of luck in your search, not all T5's are wrecks.

Don't forget 2.0T, 2.4T and 2.5T engines if going for a P2 car...
All are solid engines and particularly the 2.5T which will match a T5 0-60 even in stock 210bhp form due to loads of low down torque. No need to restrict just to T5 engines if you want power. |
