I would slightly lift the front of the car, put it on low stands with front tyres still touching the ground, undo the oil sump plug, remove the oil filter and let the old oil drip out all day, using a cloth I would soak up any old oil left in the oil filter compartment AND yet I could never put in more than 5 liters of oil, anymore and oil level would rise above the upper mark of the dipstick...

All done, it was easy, except for the air filter, oem Volvo. it was about 3mm too long and try as I might I couldn't get it on. So I had to trim a bit off the rubber seal.
just the fuel filter to do next.

When changing the fuel filter on a common rail diesel you should be *extremely* careful not to let any particles of anything get in the filter housing or any of the other parts.

The piezo injectors will not like any bits being thrown at them.

Good luck with the fuel filter, I changed mine a while back (just whipped the old one out and stuck the new one in) done it loads of times on other makes of cars. Then went to use the hand pump to pump the diesel through! and hey guess what there isn't one!!!! stumped me i was gobsmacked, i mean every diesel car has one to re fill the filter and prime the hosses well i thought they did lol

my next job was to check the glow plugs as in the cold she can be hard to start, had to look up were to find them....... found them and gave up as they are in a pig of a place to get too!! so now i am just going to book her in and get her checked over lol

Good luck to you anyway and fill the filter with diesel before you put it back on

I had a look at mine today and it looks like I can get to the oil filter without removing the fuel filter, is that right?

Hi
I am sure you can unbolt the fuel filter mount and filter but leave the pipes connected and lift it out of the way enough to help.

yes you do not need to remove the fuel filter carrier to get the oil filter out ...
