Unhappy V40 rear trailing arm bushes - advice needed.

I have a 1999 Volvo V40 and I've just had the wheels balanced and the tracking sorted today and had some bad news.

The inner of the rear tyres have been scrubbed due to collapsed bushes in the rear trailing arms. The garage have tried to find replacement bushes and in the end contacted the local Volvo spares dept. to be told that the arms need to be sent to them for the old bushes and the hole they sit in to be machined out replaced by the new parts which are bigger bushes?!?! This sounds very expensive, however as the computers "were down" Volvo couldn't give a price and are calling back tomorrow.

The guy at my local garage has suggested finding a pair of rear trailing arms inc. the bushes from salvage, which are in good condition? Does this sound feasible? or does anyone here know of a garage in Lancashire that can perform this repair without changing the arms?

My only other thought is that if I buy the bushes and have the garage remove the arms I have a friend who's an engineer and I'm pretty sure he owns a press so that may be an option too..... although I've never attempted anything like this before so I don't really want to bite off more than I can chew

When I had mine done last year at a local specialist they were taking £60 per side, supplied and fitted. IIR bushes were Around about £30 from Volvo, might be wrong though.
Replacement bushes are larger like you were told. I don't think that the garage I used had to remove the arm.

The correct way to do these bushes assuming they are the big ones on the forward end of the longutudinal arms is to pull the arm down and use the volvo special tools to pull them out and pull the new bushes in and re attach the arm .. So if you take you car to the volvo dealer they will be obliged to do them for you and charge you 54 minutes labour to do both ... If they havent got the tools they can hire them from volvo at no extra cost

Taking them elsewhere is going to end in heartache as these bushes are plastic and oversize so they have to be considerably compressed to slide in the housing .Only the volvo special tools can insert them properly . The arm and new bushes will be ruined if the correct tools are not used.The garage you mention should be avoided they obviously havent a clue how to do them , reaming indeed !
You will need a 4 wheel alignment after the job is done ...

Cheers for the help guys, I'll call the local Volvo dealership myself tomorrow and see what they have to say. I've always used the same garage and they seem very good, but like you say it sounds as though they're not sure about what they're doing on this job and its the first time I've had my V40 in there!

I'll post back tomorrow when I've spoken to the Volvo dealership.

as soon as the engine is sorted, ill be doing this, but ill installing uprated poly bushes for a mitsubishi evo 3 as soon as i know they will fit. they look like they will and also look a lot easier to fit

The EVO has nice cast alloy arms so not going to be the same ...

they look pretty simular. they might be for the fto, already have the front control arm poly bushes from an fto fitted. im hoping firebolt can confirm it when he has time as he owns an evo and is working on collecting all the parts for a whole kit

Evo 1-3's have forged steel arms & different bushes, but on the front!
The rear trailing arms are identical except for where the rear drive shaft splines come through & attach to the hub etc.


The standard Evo bushes are identical to stock Volvo items, you can see the Ralliart bushes are upgraded to solid rubber to decrease movement under acceleration, braking & cornering etc. You could fit these to your Volvo if you wished, not sure if Ralliart make anything for the early Evos anymore though.


I actually have a set of the Polybushes for my V40, they are exactly the same ones that Ash (Spangoolies) has posted a picture of! I paid a whole £7 off ebay for them. Will not be hard to fit either! Press old bush out, new one in, followed by the steel insert. Then reasemble & align! hardly rocket science is it?
Volvo just talk crap because they know the vast majority have no idea about their cars & they would rather charge you for a complete new arm than a £10 bush! I must admit fitting a complete arm maybe easier but its a hell of alot more expensive!

I'm actually wrong myself! The Evo 2-3's have forged front lower arms. The Evo 1's have pressed steel items like the X40's.
