I have just been quoted £745 for 12 months for my MY12 XC60 D5 from Volvo directly.
Has anyone had the same thing and been able to negotiate the price? And if not, what other warranty providers offer comparable cover for less money? thanks for your time. |

I'm with them but have no claim experience to share: frankly, my personal expectation is that ALL providers will be a bit arsey if & when claims are made, like most insurance companies, I'm probably screwed regardless, but may as well take the best value I could find! Quote:

Looking at the schemes I mentioned earlier my current thinking is: Warrantywise: Whilst motorists champion Quentin Wilson might be a damn fine chap the fact they've not joined the Motor Ombudsman scheme doesn't fill me with confidence when they won't allow outside scrutiny of their claims decisions. Motoreasy: I'm not impressed with their exception: Repairing or replacing components identified by a suitably qualified engineer at any time, including but not limited to at the time of claim, as being faulty before this plan started. How does that fit in with covering wear and tear? I can understand them wanting to protect against someone starting a plan knowing they have something about to break but it doesn't differentiate between a fault that's apparent or likely showing symptoms before the plan started and a fault that wouldn't be apparent until something goes bang! They also have some, not all, of the exclusions listed below for WD. On a like for like basis (no excess, dealer rates) they' are about £150 cheaper than Volvo. Warranty Direct: What's specifically excluded compared to Volvo might explain the price differential. The main ones being: Flywheels damage by worn clutch plates, clutch release valve, gearbox mountings, electric traction motors (windows, wipers, mirrors, seats, locks?), heating elements (heater, seats, F&R screens?), xeon tubes, led bulbs, airbag itself(though system IS covered), lifting struts (tailgate?). Unlike Volvo they do cover the DPF but only after specialist cleaning at your expense. Again about £150 cheaper than Volvo, like for like. So I think I'm coming around to the view that although the most expensive Volvo probably offers the best cover. It excludes “normal” wear and tear but on a 4yr old premium car with full service history and only 32k miles on the clock would anything other than service items (which no scheme covers) fall into that category? Car serviced and MOT'ed today with no problems. Asked the dealers about their experiences with extended warranty providers and there feedback was to the affect they're all a pain in the @rse, including Volvo though they're probably slightly better to claim from. If anyone in the trade (Clan or Marc?) has any thoughts I'd be interested in hearing them before I make a decision next week. |

Hang on!

I would expect all plans to kind of have some allowance for wear & tear. I took the Motoreasy plan to cover major parts (& in my case, with a fairly well 'loaded' car, the edge tech - adaptive cruise, for example, with all the laser/radar pieces that could sting me for perhaps £1500-£2000 in the worst case!). I also took it because it was a good chunk cheaper than the Volvo one, & frankly if they are a PIA, then spending as little as possible isn't a bad thing!! Quote:
That would appear to confirm my thinking on that, as I said above! Entirely your call, of course: please let us know what you choose, & hopefully neither of us will ever claim

Sorry Mike, should have replied sooner but life got in the way.
Perhaps I haven't explained what I meant clearly. Volvo are upfront in excluding normal (their wording) wear and tear. MotorEasy make a virtue of covering wear & tear from day 1 if you have their health check or are joining from another warranty but then include a get out clause* that appears to undermine that claim. Further, the clause isn't specific to wear and tear and several unfavourable reviews on Trustpilot are because it's been used for non-W&T breakdowns, one when the guy had the health check and had a serious breakdown 2 months and 1000+ miles later. I'm a tight as a ducks @rse, northerner, who probably changes his utilities/broadband/insurers more often than his socks to save a few quid a year but I'm getting the same gas, line speed etc and won't move insurers if the cover's inferior just to save money. So I take a different view, which, of course I'm entitled to - as are you. If I think, as with warranties, they're going to be @rsey about claims I look for the one with the least exclusions and fewest get out clauses (they all have some!). In my opinion, yours may be different, Volvo's warranty wins that by a country mile. Unfortunately, it also wins being the most expensive by a similar distance! The other thing I look for is where I can go if I have a dispute and the company won't budge. Volvo is an insured scheme so I can complain to the FOS and, though I've no personal experience, I've done enough research on this and other matters to believe they are robustly on the side of consumers (see earlier post). The Motor Ombudsman is a relative newcomer, it doesn't AFAIK publish decisions, so it's difficult to know if it will be robust or a bit wishy washy as some Ombudspeople are known to be. I'm pretty confident that if I have a reasonable case the FOS won't side with the insurer on a wording technicality and I'm also confident the insurers know that too. As it costs them c£400 a pop (+a black mark with their regulator) they're more likely to settle than go to the Ombudsman on a possible loser IMO. So despite being significantly more expensive I renewed with Volvo. I don't buy home insurance in the hope or expectation my house will burn down so like you I hope I don't need it. Sod's law says, after 4yrs under warranty if I don't buy I'll have a major issue. Conversely, if I do there'll be no problems, Warranty Direct's Reliability index suggests 4.5yrs is the average age when XC60's suffer a breakdown under their policies and that's near enough where I am to make me think I ought to. As they say, yer pays yer money and takes yer chance! * Volvo have a similar clause using the wording “independent engineer” which is another reason to go with them – as it's a renewal rather than a new plan I seriously doubt the FOS would side with them as it's been through 2 services and MOT's since it was covered by anyone else. |

Considering whether to extend the warranty again.....can't see me swapping the vehicle for another year or two - we swapped out other motor for a superb Kona EV which tbh we use the most now..... 1 year being offered at £350 for now. Had one claim over my 2 years (headlamp sensor unit gave an error for a while, MotorEasy paid up less the excess, although the process was slightly painful) which saved me about £240 (well, refunded me that from the £660 I paid!!). They will no doubt pester me again this week.....£25-30 pcm doesn't seem too bad for a little peace of mind to guard against major bills..... Now likely to move to indie dealer in Leicester for servicing etc. Anyone else got recent warranty experiences to share?

I think it may be the O2 sensor but how that is repaired/replaced/rectified and whether the Volvo extended warranty provider try to wriggle out of it through one of their "out" clauses remains to be seen. One thing for sure, if it is that it won't be wear and tear and if I'm not 100% happy they can wriggle out of it I'll be complaining and going to the Financial Ombudsman.

MotorEasy was always quite a bit cheaper than the Volvo one....no doubt more things to wriggle out of! There are some options - IIRC, I picked one that "only" went to about £120ph labour rate (main dealers are more, but not necessarily here in the Midlands!). & good luck, Ian, hope your issue is fixed!
