Unfortunately it isn't as clean as I'd like as there was quite a thick layer of oil, grime, spider webs, leaves and general road filth all over the engine but then what do you expect for a 30 year old engine?! I've used a strong degreaser, a whole bottle of carburettor cleaner and wd40 with scraping the filth off and using a stiff bristled brush to scrub it all and I'm still struggling to shift some of the filth! |

I managed to get the sprocket off the front of the crankshaft so I could carry on with the front end rebuild.
IMG-20210918-WA0001 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE There was quite a build up of carbon and old oil under the front crank housing. 20210918_125546 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I hadn't finished cleaning it when I took this photo hence why there is still some gasket and oil staining on the mating face. 20210918_132005 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210918_132042 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE The front crank seal had been replaced at some point and hadn't been seated properly. 20210918_133351 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE After a clean up 20210918_133754 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210918_133805 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210918_141033 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE New cambelt and tensioner fitted and all lined up IMG-20210918-WA0003 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE IMG-20210918-WA0007 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE IMG-20210918-WA0005 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210918_145026 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then moved on to the rear crank housing gasket and seal 20210922_124951 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_131424 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_133744 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_133900 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE New seal installed and the new gasket next to it 20210922_134458 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_135849 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_140715 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then managed to get the very stuck thermostat out and cleaned it up ready for the new seal. The thermostat on Alan's engine was recently replaced so I will be using that when his car arrives. 20210922_142709 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE There is a bit of pitting on the mating face but I've seen a lot worse still hold coolant so I'm not worried about it, I'll see if Alan's is any better when it arrives and if so I will use his one as this engine is being built to last a long time! 20210922_142705 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20210922_142705 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I then spent an hour scrubbing the head with my chemical concoctions to try and clean it. 20210922_144044 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE |

I think you'll increase the vlue of his car Luke with the engine lovely and clean, just a trace of "honest" dirt from 30 years use.

Well that's slightly annoying. Due to be picked up to go to Luke's tomorrow and some scrote has decided to rub the front wheel arch with his bumper. Fortunately, modern plastic vs almost 30yo Swedish steel means no panel damage and it looks like it will definitely buff out. Car's going to need a damn good polish anyway after sitting for three months. Someone somewhere has got a dark blue streak on their car, will add value I feel.

On its way.
*excited* Can I just take a moment to praise Volvo wheel bearings and handbrakes. It's been left in gear with the handbrake on and hasn't moved in three months. I was expecting all sorts of grunting and grinding and complaining but nope, handbrake off, out of gear and I'm pretty sure a three year old could have pushed it.

So the 940 arrived safely, my mate Joe did the transport for me and picked up some parts from me that I had put to one side for his mk1 760 turbo, it was nice to clear soe space in the ever crowded garage!
20211013_193951 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE I noticed the central locking seemed a bit lazy so I pulled the battery off and put it on charge with my smart charger which went in to save mode, it is now off save mode and is reconditioning the battery so it was put on charge just in time. 20211013_161728 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20211013_161736 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE Which led to the discovery of this, it has gone through unfortunately so needs dealing with as it is an MOT failure if spotted, so that will be dealt with. IMG-20211013-WA0005 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE And then I prepped the engine and gearbox for removal IMG-20211013-WA0009 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20211013_172424 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE 20211013_194035 by Luke Ryland - Flickr2BBcode LITE It just needs the downpipe bolts undoing and the gearbox mount removing then I can pull them out. I can't remove the gearbox mount until the engine is attached to the engine crane otherwise it will just tilt back and smack the back of the engine on the bulkhead which isn't ideal, the mount is slackened off ready to remove though. So the engine and gearbox should be out tomorrow |

Ah, didn't realise you'd need to do much in the interior, I'd have tidied it out a bit first if I'd known. Probably all manner of horrors from an untidy 12yo!
