Default Wheelnuts for change from steels to alloys

Hi all,
I’ve just had a set of Dracos refurbished which look terrific...I went to have them fitted with tyres and put on the car this morning though but was told the nuts that are currently on my steels aren’t suitable for alloys as they’ll bite into the alloy material.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Are the current nuts suitable or I need something alloy specific?

Looking into this more, the Dracos appear to have a steel washer insert and are compatible with the standard short open-ended Volvo wheelnuts, the long ones being too sizeable for the centre caps to fit flush...I’m annoyed that i now have to make another 2hr round trip to have the tyres swapped and the rims fitted when they could have done them on the spot as booked in this morning!

I don't know about Dracos. What you say is my experience of changing from 240 steel to Omega alloys on my 240.

Something there is little if any information about is the angle of the bearing surface of wheel nuts against wheels. I don't know how you would check that for a particular nut v. wheel combination. Hopefully as you propose a standard Volvo wheel nut with I think Volvo wheels that should be OK, cushti.

Assuming the Dracos will accept the standard Volvo open-end alloy wheel nuts Phil, this should be fine :

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01D1OS8MS

Bought a set of those for mine shortly after getting it as some congenital half-wit (and that's over-generous by 7/16!) had forced a set of Jeep UNF nuts on instead!

Fortunately with Jeep wheel-nuts being made of Hersheys, the studs were unharmed, just had a few bits of nut left behind. This cleaned off with a wire brush and running the new nuts on and off a few times with some oil on the threads to help shift the dwarf.

They're the correct angle (60 deg) and plenty of room to fit the centre cap after - torque if memory serves is 63lb/ft or 90Nm in New Money on alloys on the 7/9xx range.

Just noticed a typo - tempted to correct it but i'll leave it just for fun!

Anyway, those nuts should do the job i would think!

I’m pretty certain when this has been covered before both the standard Volvo open-ended and special chromed wheel nuts have been identified as 60 deg tapered and thus are functionally interchangeable. It’s the aesthetics and whether they will fit under wheel trims that influences the choice.

In general, it can be a nightmare identifying the right wheel nuts for a set of wheels. Old Volkswagens are a particular minefield where the original factory-fit steel wheels were nearly always radius bolts and dealer-fit alloys were often tapered.

Correct same angle for both alloy and steel wheels

Thanks all!!

I’ve ordered the set that you recommended, Dave...my original nuts are a bit battered and skanky so it’ll be good to have fresh nuts for my now as-new Dracos. Can’t wait to get them on the car! I’m having the tyres swapped from my steels as they’re almost new Hankooks, my local fitters are doing the job on Tuesday which handily allows a bit more “Make sure” curing time for the finish on the wheels.

Here's a standard alloy wheel nut and a shallow/slimline one. The height is 17mm which is quite short, most are 25mm.

I like how they have a full cone rather than the flats running right to the end. The standard ones could possibly bite into the wheel if you have an idiot with an impact gun doing things.

Hi
I bought a set of Draco. I wonder if I can use the original nuts from volvo steel on my draco? I found this webpage http://240.se/falg/
and according to this I can use nuts 87699 to my draco, which is the same nut from my steel wheel

The car is a Volvo 740
Sorry my bad english.

I think your question has already been answered - it seems they are the same!

No problem at all on your English - it's better than some on here and they are English!
