Default Heated front screen ?

Hi should a 2008 XC70 have a heated front screen ? It has the illuminated button (as shown in the photo) which sets the blower motor going full pelt but doesn't appear to have heater elements in the screen ?

That button controls the climate control for full window demist (AC on, Recirc off, Temp & Fan high)
The heated windscreen button has a windscreen symbol and wavy lines to denote the heating elements.
It would only be found on face-lift cars with the Sensus dashboard with 2 fixed screens from about 2013.

The button is the same, but there are two symbols in the center screen. One with wavy lines to show that electric windscreen heating is active, the other with airflow arrows to show that all air is sent to the windscreen, and the fan is running near full speed.

The electric heating was introduced in model year 2014, which (as usual) hit the market in 2013.
It's rather rare, but you could get it even if you have the old style instrumentation above the steering column. That combination would probably be even more unusual.

EDIT: heated windscreen symbol has a zig-zag line through it.

The OP's car is 2008 which predates the availability of this option.

I have never needed a heated front screen, the rapid demist option works and by the time you have brushed the snow off the windows it has melted the ice on the screen. It may be nice to have but not essential in my view.
None of my vehicles have heated front screens and I have had no problems driving 365 days a year.

Each to their own but I've found it a real help over the winter. Never had to use de-icer or a scraper once.
Before having the heated screen in the XC70 I've never found the full demist with the fan that brilliant from cold in the V70 as the diesel engine tries to retain as much heat as possible to warm itself.

All diesels delivered in Sweden have the additional heater fitted. My car is too old to have any electrically heated window, and the other XC70 we have doesn't have the option fitted, even if it's new enough.

But both have the additional heater, so in a day with frost, we simply remote start that heater via the phone, and that takes care of the ice.

Love the idea of the additional heater but not routinely fitted to cars here in the UK as our climate isn't as extreme as yours.
Plus you need to have somewhere to plug in the electrical lead.

I'm talking about the "jet engine", the heater that runs on diesel. No outlet needed. Electric power comes from the car's battery, and heating by burning diesel.

I was under the impression, and I may be totally wrong and someone can put me right, that my 2012 XC70 had an auxiliary electrically powered heater that comes into operation when the car is cold and switches off when the engine coolant heated climate control system gets up to operating temperature. Or did I just imagine that because the heater seems to deliver hot air very quickly once the car is started.
