Which clutch do I need?
Hi guys, I hope you can help me out. I'm a little confused as there seems to be several types of clutch kit. I have a 1990 740 Turbo with the B230FT and M46 4 speed overdrive box. Any ideas what clutch kits I can use? I've seen some like this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VOLVO-740-...item4aadc5c6b7 But there are also specific clutch kits for the turbo. I'm confuzled. Can one of you point me in the right direction? Many thanks. |

I think you'll find that the "turbo" ones are for B230FTs with M90s. But a reputable vendor should (a) be able to tell you from your registration number and/or (b) know the Volvo equivalent part number and Volvo will give you the part number if you ring them with the registration number.
Also, I think that there are 3 different OM clutches for M46 cars, corresponding to the three different overdrive units, the P, the J and the P/J. The P/J is on the twin-cam but I always get confused which of the P or J is the N/A and which the turbo. I am told that the turbo clutch will go on the twink - and is stronger (I found this out after spending yonks getting the RIGHT clutch for the twink) so I imagine that the turbo clutch will go onto an N/A as well - but the other way round would likely be asking for trouble. |

OP, you need to find a clutch setup that lists 228mm (9") diameter, 22 splines (IIRC) and for a turbo application. N/A clutches (on 240s at least, so maybe they carried on like that for 7/9s) are in my experience 215mm (8.5"). |
