Default rear main seal

My XC70 is currently in garage have a few jobs done, one was cleaning/ replaceing the oil breather system. Now they have it on the ramp they think the rear main seal may be going as well

So a couple of questions
1. Does it happen often
2.Was it caused by the increase in crank pressure and maybe when it's not there it will stop.
3.How much does it normally cost to fix, my garage is being a none commital at the moment!!!!

crank case pressure could cause main seal to leak but as they've sorted that I would have it back and keep an eye on it As it is quite expensive to have done I'm sure you will have someone along shortly to give you some idea what it costs

the seal takes about 7 hours to change.

there's no mileage/time limit when it leaks.

usually the turbo return pipe seal leaks and can be confused as the rear main leaking.

as mentioned, get it steamed off and monitor the leak, could be ok now after the breathers have been cleaned out.

gearbox has to come out seal itself is about £5. labour will be problem manual box or auto. having gone that far they would inspect clutch if manual you could end up paying £300 £400 if not more so is it worth it.it may not be leaking now crankcase pressure is cured if it does still leak i don't think it will harm if its auto more of a problem if its manual it could end up on clutch hope this helps

It's a auto and I hope it is just the turbo oil return leaking ( that is what the local volvo dealer said) but it's my local volvo specalist that has the car at the moment. I hope they are not trying to rip me off!!!!

i would change the turbo return pipe seal and gasket, only takes 0.5 hour, better starting with the cheap option first.
