Default Transfer box/driveshaft grinding noise

Hi Folks,

I’ve got a noise coming from down near the transfer box. It’s a grinding type of noise under acceleration on a bend or on a straight. From where its coming from it could be anywhere on the transmission/transfer box including the driveshafts. It doesn’t sound like a CV joint but who knows. Possibly the inner driveshaft joint- basically I’ve no idea. Does anybody have any advice on how to hunt the culprit down.
I done a search on here and one thing that came up was the propshaft grinding on the steering rack if engine mounts are knackered. How do I check the engine mounts?
I changed the lower engine mount under the pulley a couple of years back so I know it’s not that.

Thanks in advance

Hi is your noise road speed dependent or engine speed (i.e. RPM), terrain dependent. ? And is the noise consistent throughout the cab or isolated to say nearside or offside?

Seems to be down near the nearside. Seems to be mainly around 2000rpm but it can sometimes be around 1000rpm. Took it for a drive yesterday and a certain bend with hill where I normally always get the noise is no longer making the noise so I’m beginning to think it may be a loose shield etc. I’ll keep you updated.
I checked the top engine brace as you indicated in your thread but it’s all tight.(You mentioned it was the “top engine brace” in your thread but you appear to have stated “engine mount” in the “Horrible grinding sound from front” thread. Was it the brace that spans between the struts(and is not attached to the engine) that was your issue or an engine mount?)

Im in the same boat. I was possibly thinking the play in the CV that could be making the noise. I can hear it like down at the passengers footwell area. All my mount are almost new aprt from the top trut mount that has loads of play in. I doubt it would be that causing the noise. After Christmas I need to do a abs ring so going to install a new CV cup as I have one spare
