Absolutely this! Penny-pinching bean counters! Other makers do the same. The BMW E39 had a gauge, its successor, the E60 lost it, and it's successor, the F10 regained it! It's all very well having a gong and a warning light if the car overheats, but if it's running too cool due to a faulty thermostat you may have no clue for months.
I believe the newer P3 Volvo's have temperature gauges again (the dash/centre console is different). I'm stuck with the older dash, as mine is a 2007 plate.

You're right. Just had a squint at a couple of newer ones on Autotrader and, sure enough, they have gauge.

An update. I bit the bullet and bought a replacement thermostat this week - a Gates TH35991, which seems to be one of the recommended makes judging by various online suppliers. All looks OK, but it doesn't come with a separate gasket, which was a bit of a surprise. A gasket is listed for the lower part of the housing (which I don't intend to remove) but no reference to a gasket for the upper part. There is a rubber(?) seal on the circular flange of the thermostat, but it seems unlikely that alone would provide a seal. Any clues please, people?

No experience with this engine, but I’d hazard a guess it’s an o-ring seal in the housing. My P2 E3 was, now I’ve got the E5, it’s a nightmare, but o-ring sealed.

Thanks for that, an 'O' ring is pretty much what I expected/hoped for. I'd done a bit of a search online and YouTube hoping for some clarity or even a part number for a gasket or 'O' ring but drawn a blank. Most of the videos seemed to be US ones on petrol engines or otherwise unclear. Think I'll hang fire on doing the job for now as I'd like to have a new seal at hand in case the old one is like a wet jelly baby.

The rubber type gasket shown in the photo looks like the fitting that other Volvo cars have & many other makes:~
It is not an "O" ring as such but a "U" shape that fits over the OD of the thermostat.

if it is the above- clean the fitting recess and spread a small amount of your favourite gasket seal onto the parts (you don't need a lot) the above seal will get compressed as you tighten the retaining bolts- coat the threads with copper grease for the next time/owner.
Bob.

Thanks Bob, point noted.

Sadly this gasket (11 in the pic) is only available as part of the whole thermostat assembly at £124.80. I've ordered a couple of sheets of gasket paper.
