Default Thinking about a V90.

Currently in an 04 XC70 D5. Lovely old thing, but I find myself looking at V90’s and I’m surprised how much they’ve depreciated - I’m seeing some at c £15 to £19 k that look like good value compared to the last XC70’s.

If I were looking at a 100k mike D4 or D5 and planning on doing say 20k a year, what should I expect reliability wise?

I recently bought a D4 66 plate inscription with 102000 miles on it for £14000 (just before lockdown, I see prices have risen since then) Quite relaxed about the mileage as it's got a full Volvo history and has spent all of it's life on the Motorway. Cambelt was done at 94000, so make sure the one you purchase has had it done and it's not just under the mileage, otherwise its£299 or £399 with tensioner at Volvo.
Also check it's had the EGR recalls.

Don't know much about reliability, but whilst looking I saw a couple at around 200,000, so they can go on for at least that long, I've only done 4000 mine due to lockdown, very happy so far, apart from the 20" wheels...Expensive and poor choice in tyres and they aren't really suitable for our roads, you really feel every pothole..

Thanks, appreciate the feedback. Agree about tyres, I like a bit of sidewall!

If you like comfort, go for the V90 Cross Country. It has slightly raised suspension which combined with a higher profile tyre does result in a nice smooth ride. 18 or 19” are standard I think.

The CC is also easier to get in and out of as I found the normal V90 quite low.

Oh and in terms of reliability I had the following issues over 4 years and 45k miles;

Yr 1.
Steering wheel control module (basically the control sticks and buttons) replaced as faulty.
Recall work for airbag headlining bolts. And it rattled forever after this ‘fix’
Sunroof blind mechanism failed. Obviously related to the headlining work as the entire cassette had to be dropped for this. Car was off the road for 2 weeks whilst this was fixed...required entire new sunroof cassette from Sweden.

Yr 2.
Rattle from rear boot caused by clips failing on the trim that holds all the beauty panels together around the emergency warning triangle storage. Again this rattled all the time afterwards and no amount of ‘padding’, new bits fixed it. Not that noticeable really though.
Rear brake pads needed replacing at 20k miles. It seems this is a known feature of SPA cars with autobrake/pilotassist
Another steering wheel control module
Drivers seat leather wearing in odd places. Not enough to qualify as a warranty repair.

Yr 3.
Trim piece around the drivers seatbelt fell off due to missing clips. Presumably from when it was taken off in Yr 1 to fix the airbag headliner bolts.
Drivers door main speaker failed.

Yr 4.
Electronic steering wheel lock fuse popped. Apparently there was a TSB issued to fit a higher rated fuse, which somehow missed my car.
Rear pads needed replacing.

Now I’ve written that all down, it seems like a lot ! Compared to our Focus which in the same period required just break pads and one headlight bulb when doing double the mileage of the V90CC.

Would I buy one, yes.
Would I buy one without a warranty for the duration of my ownership, not a chance !
