Glow Plugs
Guys, no doubt this has been talked about in the past but it's been difficult finding information so here goes:
For the D3 (163) EuroCarParts gives me two options, one more expensive than the other and that's it, little to no information on the differences. I tried Autodoc and it turns out the difference is metal vs ceramic tip (or Duraterm vs Duraspeed, see page 3 for deails). Autodoc says metal tip for the D5204T2 (which is what I have) and ceramic tip for the D5204T3. Question: do we know if Volvo "upgraded" to the ceramic option even for the T2? If not I'll stick with the classic metal tip. NOTE: another difference between metal vs ceramic are the voltages (4.4V vs 7V) Last edited by bananarama; Dec 1st, 2023 at 14:05. |

UPDATE: Did some more thinking and pretty sure I needed the 4.4V version (aka 144) so bought a set from Opie Oils.
No penetrating fluid used, instead after a drive to the woods for a nice walk with the doggo I got to work while the engine was still hot. They came out easily but the fuel rail was in the way of my slightly too girthy socket. Managed to just about do it by unbolting the fuel rail and "flexing it" to slide the socket onto the plugs. They were all ~1.9ohms except for plug 2 which was ~19ohms. However, I think the reason I was getting glow plug related error codes was because the existing plugs were 7V versions when they should be 4.4V; cowboy mechanics! Anyway, new plugs are in and no more error codes. The ultimate test should come soon when temperatures drop below 5 Celsius. glow_plug_replace.jpg |
