Default V50 cooling issues! 😢

Hi there,

I'm sure this has probably been covered elsewhere and I apologise in advance!

I own a 54 reg V50 2.0 diesel, I'm having some cooling issue's the car warms from cold as expected with the temp gauge never going over half, but when warm I've noticed the fan isn't cutting in at all and the bottom rad hose to header tank is stone cold but it's never overheated????!! It's not using water or blowing it out, it seams as there is no circulation with only a small hose at the header tank returning anything, I'm thinking that the thermostat is stuck closed or the pump isn't working, but surely if its the latter it would destroy itself?!

I've only noticed it the last couple of days but could have been like it alot longer as the temp gauge has never risen. Very confusing

Thanks

If your car isn't overheating, how can you have a cooling issue?

Sorry,

I forgot to mention there's also no pressure in the system, I'm led to believe that is a pressurised system to prevent it boiling? I know it makes no sense but surely the fan should be cutting in and both rad hoses hot when at operating temp?

Stick some diagnostics on it and monitor the coolant temperature.
If it's reaching and maintaining operating temp and not straying over, you haven't got a problem.

The only time Iv'e ever heard any fans is when the air-conditioning is on. Other than that, I don't think i have ever heard mine come on!

Thanks for the replies,

That's how I first noticed something wasn't right, when stationary the air con blows hot but when moving along it blows ice cold again don't know if it's normal? It's never worked like that in any other car I've owned! I was guessing it was because the gas in the a/c is getting to hot causing it to cut out, the system was re-gassed about a month ago.

Am I being paranoid?!?!

Do your fans not come on with your A/C? The front fans should come on when you switch the A/C on with the engine running. If they dont then first stop is to test the fuses!

Yeah, they don't cut in with the a/c, checked the relevant fuses in the engine bay the 50amp one is ok, is there anymore? Does anyone know if there's a relay or is it built into the fan motor? Has anyone had issues with fans seizing? I'm more worried about the lack of circulation tbh.

Got a thermostat on order with the dealer, hopefully I'll get water to the radiator then and the fans should cut in?

If your fan isn't working, it isn't working and a new thermostat won't make any difference.
As it is, you don't have the symptoms of a stuck thermostat and coolant temperature data will tell you what's happening in that area.
Diagnostics are cheaper than changing parts on a guess.
