And my D5, in a higher and heavier XC70, consumes less than 7 l/100 km on the average. That's quivalent to a range of about 42 mi/gal (UK). It does have a particle filter.
There's something else wrong with your S60. |

The most economical D5's (and most refined) are the earlier 163BHP D5's. The later Euro 4 185's are less economical but this isn't down to the presence of a DPF filter - it's a whole raft of changes that relate to Euro 4 compliance and on just about any engine converted from E3 to E4 from any manufacturer, MPG has fallen slightly.

2011 reg, D5 auto 202? Bhp or some such figure. I've driven hard, gentle and in between, it doesn't matter! I haven't done the full to full calculation and I know the guage is'average' consumption.
I figured greater performance, auto box and driving methods account for most of the difference. I had the D5 163 auto. I miss that bus! |

My engine is the D5245T15, originally with 215 hp/440 Nm. Mine has the Polestar option, giving 230 hp/470 Nm. It's a Euro 5 engine.
I'm also referring to the indicated average consumption. Right now the car says 6.8 l/100 km, but I haven't towed anything the last two weeks now. I also had some long haul last week (1000+ km). We have two XC70 cars. The other one is a 2016 with the 181 hp/420 Nm D4 engine, called D5244T12. Still the same 5-cylinder, both automatic and AWD, but the D4 is Euro 6. It usually runs a bit cheaper, during the same conditions. But recently it has frequently been used over shorter distances in urban areas. Right now, it's showing an average of 6.9 l/100 km. Almost equal to the D5, that is. But the D4 Euro 6 is easier to drive below 6 l/100 km than the D5 Euro 5 is. Another factor into this equation is that the total gear ratio is higher for the D4. At the same engine speed, the D4 does 115 km/h, the D5 107 km/h. Acceleration is noticeably quicker for the D5... The summary of this is that there's not a clear and obvious difference in consumption between the different models. It depends a lot on your driving conditions and how you drive. I replaced my brake pads after 170000 km (front) and 200000 km (rear). I don't know how long the rotors last, I've only driven the car 270000 km. Those who use the brakes a lot also use more fuel. Just thought I'd chime in with a geartronic S80
Mine is a 2007 2.4 diesel with the 6-speed geartronic. Usually OBC gives me a high of 45-50mpg sitting at 70 on cruise control and that's the best I get. That's 40psi all round and on v-power I tried instead using Shell FuelSave with the DieselRhino fuel additives and this weekend, across two 130 mile motorway journeys mostly at 70 on cruise, I averaged 58.4mpg which I never thought I'd see from the S80 |

It sounds much less clattery and like a happier engine, which for me, on a car that's 12 years old is good enough for me. |

I wouldn’t pay any attention to the indicated mpg. They just seem to be made up numbers. Maybe not as wild as my P2 V70, which indicated anything from 50-70, but was actually achieving a reliable 40. My 08 Skoda is 11% optimistic. Reliably 11%...

S80 2L D3 '64 diesel
In 'Economy' mode I get 50.2 mpg OBC, 45.6 mpg at the pump In 'Sport' mode with an economy foot! I get 54.3 mpg OBC, 50.9 at the pump. I always fill to the brim at around 600 miles. Last edited by RincewindsHat; Apr 9th, 2019 at 10:48. |
