In my 21 years of motoring, never topped up the screenwash myself. Always gets topped up at the annual service. But I only do around 7,000 miles/year.

I top mine up a least once a week with Tesco concentrated screenwash, (other supermarkets versions are available) depends on the time of year what the strength is, at the same time as i check the tyre pressures, there is the issue of Legioneers Disease in stagnant water, which is removed due to Screenwash.

Personally I think that there are other areas of far bigger risk where you might be better to focus - like running your shower through carefully straight to drain if you havent used it in a few days.

Always use a proper screenwash with anti-freeze capabilities.
The last thing you want is a frozen screenwash bottle or lines or jets. When water freezes it expands. When trapped in a container the expansion can easily break the container Always used distilled water to top off the wash Tap water contains minerals and impurities which, over time, will cause gunk to accumulate and grow in your washer bottle and filter. This will eventually clog the filter and jets I buy a 10 liter bottle of premix screenwash that is good to -20 degrees C for the princely sum of around 4 Euros. I tend to run through 2 of these a Winter, then I switch to Summer screenwash.

I don't think this question makes a lot of sense unless you correct by the country/region where you live.

I do wonder whether the OE screen wash from BMW & VW/Audi are one and the same, what with them both tending to fit fan jets to their vehicles; having owned cars from both and bought their screen wash, they seemed to have the same sort of smell and remarkable cleaning power as each other....both of which bare a remarkable similarity to the Volvo concentrate as well.
The BMW went through a crazy amount of screen wash (turned out to be a leak, only took the dealer 6 attempts at investigating to find it!!), so I bought a 20L container of the stuff and that's what I now use on the V90. It's good down to -63 when used neat, but I tend to dilute it 1:1 (makes it good for -23 IIRC) - cleans the screen really well, doesn't smear or bung up any of the jets either. I'll probably buy the same again when I run out - at ~£60 delivered it seems decent value when you work out the diluted cost per litre, albeit nowhere near as cheap as SwissXC90's stuff. |

Hej Volvofans,
funny Question. Hmmmm, I would say, this depends very much on the climate zone you live! Ask somebody in Skandinavia, or somebody in Bavaria (me) or somebody in UK. The answers will be always different! It just depends on the need. But, as Volvo comes from the cold Area of the world, the containers are dimentioned pretty good, so that I, in the cold bavarian winter, with a lot of salt on the tarmac do not need more than three containers over the season. Hej Hej Gernot

Thanks for this thread!
I usually check mine whenever I wash the car, but as it’s been off the road for a few weeks, I’d not checked it. Let’s say it took rather a lot to fill it!

I’ve yet to fit more than four litres into it. That’s less than a British gallon.
