Anti-Skid Service and Transmission Service Required
Hi,
I have just bought a 2011 XC90 D5 Auto with 112k miles. Full service history between main dealer and Volvo specialists. The car made it the 90 mile home trip from the garage brilliantly, no issues. However, later that evening when driving round a slight corner at ~40mph there was a shuddering and I got "Anti-skid Service Required" and "Transmission Service Required" pop up on the dash. The gearbox went into limp as it seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear and the "D" on the dash went to a "-". Was only 2 minutes from home so made it back. Then 20 minutes later went out again, errors had cleared. But 2 minutes into the journey they both came back again (no shudder this time) and went back into limp. This time I was again doing about 40mph but on a straight road. Is there anything common that would cause these two faults to come on together? An old Discovery that I had would trigger 3 lights (ABS, traction and hill descent) when an ABS sensor went bad. I have it booked into a Volvo specialist tomorrow to read the codes but am worried this could be a serious problem and I may have to reject the vehicle. Having scoured the internet there are a lot of reports that the transmission in the XC90 isn't really worthy of Volvo's reputation and typically start failing not much after 100k. There are a couple of circumstances where a relatively innocuous problem can cause symptoms like this - I have not personally dealt with too many but for example a bad connection on a specific injector can cause transmission errors etc.
You need to take it back to the supplying garage - you cannot expect them to take the car back when other people they have not appointed have worked on it and changed things. The other way of saying that is you will be giving them a very good excuse to not take any responsibility for it, if they are so minded. The car needs to go to a Volvo dealer or good independent with Volvo equipment - it might be a very simple, cheap sensor issue that's fixed quickly and the supplying garage knew nothing about. The worst thing that can happen, and we see so often on here, is the car ends up going between several garages who dabble with poke and hope diagnosis. That will certainly empty your wallet.

Thanks - have had codes read by a reputable local Volvo specialist.
Engine System Service was triggered due to the supplying garage over filling it with oil when they serviced it. It is also showing an injector code. Interestingly on the way to the specialist the faults triggered at exactly the same time it dropped onto 4 cylinders for a minute or so does sound like potentially an injector issue. I'll stick some injector cleaner through it over the weekend and see if that clears it up. I'm slightly reluctant to have the supplying garage do anything to it really as they were a bit shady to say the least. If it does need a couple of new injectors I'd be inclined to pay for it myself than risk it getting £20 eBay specials put on it. |

If you have an injector code - its either an electrical connection or the injector itself. Nothing you put in the fuel tank will fix that.

Check the wiring leading to the injectors and also the connectors particularly injector5. A fault here can certainly cause all of your issues including the gearbox misbehaving . It's pretty well documented and Volvo obviously know that there is an issue in this area as the sell an injector connector harness repair kit. Check the cheap and obvious first. As Tannaton says, don't waste your money on injector cleaner. Check the injector harness.
