It could still be the rack but check the wishbone bushes (and the alignment).

Hey chaps,

just an update.

I had my car looked at by a local volvo specialist. They have confirmed that it's going to need a new steering rack

In addition they also found the following wrong with the car

1. Angle gear sleeve stripped (very obvious when only the front wheels span whilst up on the lift )
2. Front and Rear lower engine mounts collapsed
3. Reaction mount worn
4. Top engine mount worn
5. Whine from rear axle
6. slight whine from front transmission

I'm waiting for them to email me over a proper quote but my initial thoughts are to get all of the mounts and steering rack done. Which will obviously fix the problem that I have with my jerky steering. Is there anything else here that I shouldn't wait to get sorted?

They suspect but weren't able to prove whether one of the rear wheel bearings was what was causing the rear axle sound, they wanted to test this by spinning them up on the lift but obviously they couldn't as there's no angle gear

I am concerned about the whine on the transmission; although i've never noticed it -- I have no idea whether the fluid has ever been changed out on this but that's got to be the first place to start right?

Cheers fellas

My 2005 has had a slight whine (usually under light load) for years. Just monitor it.

I’ve decided to leave my steering alone for the time being, it’s vastly improved over the way it was & gets better when warm.

Hey guys

long time since I followed up on this issue.

Since my last post i've gone ahead and done the following

replaced all 4 tyres and had 4 wheel laser alignment done
fitted poly subframe bush inserts
replaced ALL 5 engine mounts (The rear vacuum was a pain to do on my drive!)

Although not 100% gone away, the steering wheel pulsing / pulling back to centre issues seem to be very subtle now and it's no longer something i'm worried about fixing anytime soon. If it ends up getting worse then I think i'll look to get my own rack refurbished but for right now it's something i'm prepared to live with.

Thanks everyone for their inputs on this. I think we can consider this thread closed

Cheers!

Cookie
