Default XC90 D5 (163) Engine Oil - Is this the right one?

Hi All,

Not having had the car long i have decided to do an oil change. After much research on here I deduced that Castrol Edge 0w30 is the one to go for to A3/B3 standards.

I took advantage of the eurocarparts 30% off offer and got a good deal on a few litres.

On the europarts website it gives the following description:-
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4
API SM/CF
BMW Longlife-01
Vauxhall GM-LL-A-025,
Vauxhall GM-LL-B-025
MB-Approved 229.3, MB-Approved 229.5
VW 502 00/ 503 01/ 505 00Best oil for modern high performance enginesLower fuel consumptionFully synthetic technology

It arrived today and i notice that on the label it says it is "new" and the label on the back looks like this:-

Please can someone confirm if this is the correct oil? Am i correct in thinking that C2 C3 is a more advanced standard?

If this oil is the right one and its a bargain with 30% off it can be ordered on the Eurocarparts website part number 521770991

Thanks

Sam

C2 / C3 is exactly the same spec as A3 / B3 (A2 / B2 is not used), the C means that it is a low sulphur oil more suitable for engines fitted with a catalyst or DPF.

I thought Volvo recommended the A5/B5 spec?

Rob.

I found the specs of the oil on the Castrol website. It would appear that this C3 type is the new formula that meets all of the other criteria for B3/B4 etc...

I think that means this is the right stuff. What worried me is that it is a low ash oil and i dont have a DPF so was wondering if it was still ok?

Thanks

Sam

As I understand it from what I have read on Oil Grade Specs, C2/C3 is the latest spec. and is backward compatible with previous specs A/B specs so it is better with the low ash level with DPF's etc but certainly won't be detrimental in any other engine requiring the 0W/30 grade.

For further detail, go here.

In particular:

"Unlike API the ACEA specs are split into performance/application catagories as follows:

A1 Fuel economy petrol
A2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
A3 High performance and/or extended drain
A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines
A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance

B1 Fuel economy diesel
B2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
B3 High performance and/or extended drain
B4 For direct injection car diesel engines
B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance

C1-04 Petrol and Light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 low SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
C2-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
C3-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible, Higher performance levels due to higher HTHS.

Note: SAPS = Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur.

Put simply, A3/B3, A5/B5 and C3 oils are the better quality, stay in grade performance oils"

They do for the later Euro 4 D5 with 18,000 mile intervals.

Which one is the later spec? I have an audi a2 that needs 5w30 vw507 spec, and often wonder whether I could just use this in my 2005MY xc90 too!

Default Engine seized due to wrong oil?

An acquaintance of mine is a mechanic and serviced a client's 2009 XC90 with 18000 miles on it. Some time later the engine seized. Volvo refused to honour the warranty claiming the failure was due to my acquaintance refilling with the wrong type of oil. He is now being sued for the cost of a new engine. He is adamant that he did use the right type of oil but even if not is it plausible that just the wrong type of oil could cause an engine to seize? No oil at all might do it but just the wrong type? Any experience out there?
