Default D5 205Ps Engine System Service Required

Hi,

Got the 'Engine System Service Required' message today then the car went into reduced power. The message seems to be intermittent with the reduced power more permanent. I am trying to get
the codes read.

However has anyone had similar issues? I tried the in dash code display and got 021 and 186 but the message wasn't displayed at the time.

Any help appreciated,
Cheers

Have you got access to Vida to read the codes at all?

That might help clarify more precisely what’s going on.

Does the car start and idle ok?

Quick easy try may be to clean the MAP sensor on top of the intake (if it’s a P3 model).

I’m in the Comm from next Tuesday, so PM me if I can help.

No quick access to Vida unfortunately, getting codes read on Tuesday at the earliest.

Will have a look at the MAP sensor, cheers for that. Going to replace fuel filter and take some oil out as it is sitting at the max. I did notice before it happened a 'whoosh' sound from the engine bay under harder acceleration.

Thanks for the help

Is it the P3 model? I had to buy a special tool (about a tenner off eBay) to get the fuel filter off. Don’t know what it’s like trying to remove/replace without one…but just a heads up it might be trickier without the tool! You can also get them off Amazon.
This is what the tool looks like:

Are there any good Volvo garages up Caithness way?

Cheers for that, it is a P3 model.

Closest is a 2 hour drive, there is a local lad that has all the kit for fault code reading, he is going to take a look on Tuesday. Just trying to do some basic fault finding and reading to see what it might be. Though I think I might just be stressing myself out more ha. Also if I can get a simple fix that would help as the car is still needed to be used.

I had it on max: too much oil.

Then it could be that an intake hose has failed. The ECU detects the leak and goes into low power/no boost mode.

Mine failed in bottom corner at exit of intercooler, where many others have failed as well. Tell tail was partly moisture where the air leaked out and blew some watery/oily mist out. The pipe was about £200 plus 45 minutes for garage to fit.

Engine related issues can often be read out with a generic code reader.
Since the car does claim service is required, it's 100% sure that there is at least one fault code related to the issue.

Will have a look, there is a noise under harder acceleration, similar to that of the door not been closed properly

You probably
Could remove the fuel filter without the tool however (having done it last week with the tool) it will be very hard work and you do risk damaging the filter cover.

Apparently you can’t get the filter cover alone and meet to buy the whole assembly at cost.

Buy the tool for the filter…
