While that's true, it's also fair to say that the BAME community have been proven to be 4 times more likely to die from the Kung Flu as anyone else.

The common factor there as far as i can see is that many disabled people live in assisted housing which is like a glorified scare home with a little more freedom for the inmates. Likewise the BAME community tend to have large family units (often extended family as well) living in one premises. The common point is many people living in a common dwelling.

We all know that last time the kids went back to school the R rate went through the roof, i seriously hope that doesn't happen again now but it's a similar scenario of many people being in the same room/building turning it into a breeding ground for germs.

Also i don't believe that masks or face coverings have actually altered anything because if you're in the proximity of someone with flatulence, you will smell it through the mask/face covering. If that can get through you can bet your life (or not, your choice!) that the Kung Flu can get through.

Portugal has the lowest "R" in Europe yet we are on the red list. 62000 cases in population of just over ten million

According to a brief search online and checking at least 2 different sites to make sure the figures were the same, your figures are a bit behind the times :

https://corona.help/country/portugal

I suppose a lot of it is down to how you interpret those figures but a total number of cases of 810459, a peak about 6-10 days ago of 72665 active cases which has now dropped suggests Portugal is still in a vulnerable position so i can see why they're exercising caution.

Those are cases per million people for the active cases by the way so if there is a population of 10 million people, that's about 726650 cases.

By comparison, there are 911512 active cases in the UK at present, considering the population is ~66 million that isn't many more than Portugal (about 20% in a country nearly 7 times more people) when you consider it.

https://corona.help/compare/logarith...united-states/

Comparison graphs there for the UK, USA and Portugal - no idea of the population of the USA but it gives a good idea!

At the moment things I’ve been getting from the EU are now taking about two weeks. This a huge improvement from the start of the year.

Last year there was talk about setting up a ferry from a port in the north of the Netherlands - Eemshaven - sailing to Rosyth. That seems to have died a death for now but then if the fish woman gets her way and there's a new land border between the remaining parts of the UK and Scotland then I guess more freight will be going that route as well as passengers...

...I think at the moment there is one cargo boat a day sailing between these ports. I'm guessing it is a tiny percentage of the stuff reaching Scotland via Dover and Harwich. Still it could be helping with the better delivery times you are now experiencing.

Another effect that might help (with your faster delivery times) is that a load of Irish cargo is now sitting on boats for days as they make their way round the bottom of the UK. Apparently there is too much paperwork needed for the "traditional Irish freight route" which used to be to drive from Dover to Wales / Liverpool (was it?)...

...so I'm guessing there is a reduction in freight for the Republic of Ireland being passed through UK ports. This might help.
