Phoned our local Timpsons and it appears they've been supplied with upgraded software code readers and they should be able to read & clone Volvo OEM chipped keys - will visit them later this or next week and post re the possibility/probability of cloning Volvo transponder chips. (NB the cutting of a "dead" key has never been a problem)

Hi
This is only the key I'm guessing ?
As a spare that will work ignition ....not the locking fob ?

Yes, you are absolutely right.

The C70's fob is independent of the key and works from the alarm/central locking receiver/transponder unit at the underside of the right hand end of the dash located under the dash immediately above the accelerator (a green or grey receiver unit with two multi plug adaptors which is located on a right angle bracket - you need to depress two locating clamps/clips to slide it off the bracket (check here https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=277553 )- it can be changed without the need to be re-coded ie a second hand receiver with two fobs can just be swopped over (Thanks Minty for the two fobs and the central locking receiver unit @ £30!!!)

The key has a transponder chip which can be cloned ie if the chip in the key shroud is copied it mimics that which already exists and works ie/eg you could have an unlimited number of, for example, key number 1, as they would all have the same identifier code - the chips will all be identical copies of key1 so are seen as the same key by the system - their code identifies them, hence from the systems point of view they are the correct key.

It doesn't matter whether they are the 1st key or the 100th copy, they appear to be the same one and only key - the system allows up to a maximum of 3 differently coded system ID'd keys, whilst it can be can re-programmed for additional or replacement coded keys the system requires the deletion of earlier key codes to keep the total of numbered/coded keys at a maximum of three different values - you could have an infinite number of keys if all their codes were one of three entered values

Changed the Meyle HD droplinks I put on the car around Feb 2011 for a new pair!

They weren't clunking or anything but I'd noticed prior to putting the car in for its last MOT that one of the 'boots' on a droplink balljoint had split - the MOT guy either didn't notice or wasn't bothered but I thought I'd best replace them before the weather changed and road salt got in.

Took them off - the ball joint with the split was still nice and shiny despite being exposed and the movement felt just like the new ones - if the boot hadn't split they probably would have lasted several more years.

So, about a 7.5 year lifespan from something with a four year warranty means I've really had my moneys worth out of them.

Cheers

John

Nothing much. Hardly worth writing.
Another MoT passed.
New wiper blades, 5 small bulbs, oil+filter, g/box oil change (manual, can feel the difference).
now at 55,000 miles. A few years left I hope.

What oil did you use for the gearbox? I should probably change mine at some point.

My job today was to replace the trim clips that broke when I was fixing the tailgate central locking, which were all new when I fixed the rear washer a few weeks ago. I have now bought 50 of the ones that go along the bottom of the tailgate trim.

easiest way to to the job is remove front wheel, can then see the drain&filler bolts. Use a foot or so of hose and a funnel.

Whilst scanning through the channels on TV I came across Discovery Turbo showing "Engine Addict with Jimmy DEVILLE - Volvo 850 T5R" which was first aired in 2015. He uses a super turboed T5R engine to achieve over 700 horsepower in a sand hill climber.
