Default Front driveshaft: separating outside CV

I'm trying to fix a clicking sound in the front right driveshaft. First thing is to replace the CV.

VIDA states that the CV can be separated from the driveshaft by "tapping with a brass drift"

Drifting it with a 4 lb sledge has absolutely failed to move it, which seems excessive. Any other tricks?

Damien

isn't there a circlip you have to squeeze around the inner bore where the driveshaft goes into the CV joint?

That's how I did it - try rotating the driveshaft through 120-180 degrees in the vice in case the retaining clip has settled. If you keep bashing it you will destroy the clip but probably still be able to use the shaft.

Check also of there is a spring clip around the inner edge of the CV outer housing - if you remove this you can sometimes get the balls out and then remove the outer part to access the inner clip.... if that makes sense?

Keep in mind it may have been replaced and might not be the same as a Volvo original.

Normally you use a copper hammer. The softness of the copper stops it bouncing straight off the steel. Brass is also soft so same applies there. Whenever I do it I use the shaft as a guide and slide the hammer along the shaft quickly. I normally get it off within a few bangs.

There's no way this is popping off. I've even tried heating the spider. Looks like it may go in the discard pile.

It is not possible to remove the balls without pulling the CV, and there is no externally accessible circlip. Just the main snapring. It looks original with 150k km, and had plenty of grease.

Thanks anyway.

I ended up cutting the CV cage up to get the CV off then pressing off the spider. Took about 12t to release and the snapring was still whole.

I think I should have bought a new driveshaft...
