Smile Help for a Noobie

Hi guys and girls.
thought id say hello and ask for a little advice at the same time

Ive just taken hold of a nice 1.9 D sport (2002) its the 1st Volvo ive owned. (only owned Motorbikes in the past)

Are there any things that i should keep an eye out for or any known common problems / Faults to be aware of??

I do have one fault i know of with the car and that is with the window washer, for some reason if i try to spray the windows the fuse just blows however if i knock the wiper stalk down 1st and set the wipers to maximum speed then use the activate the spray all is fine, I know that the pump has been replaced and thats not the fault but not too sure what it could be ???, Does Any one have an idea on the fault or a fix for it ??

Remove plastic around steering wheel and see for any possible damaged cables. If you got opportunity, borrow yourself another wiper switch and test with it.

Me again, ive got e a new stalk and fitted it, thought all was good as when fitted I tried the washers several times and all was good, but then when i was driving the car, I used the washer again and ....... the fuse has blown again.

it seems that the fuse only blows if the car is actually driving and i try to use the washers, It used to be ok putting the wipers to fast speed then using the washer but now the fuse is starting to blow doing this,

im hoping some one can help with places to start to diagnose the fault, what the likely fault is or could be, even locations of wireing / connectors that may be worth checking out,

I hate intermittent faults.

Sounds like a short circuit on wiring somewhere. Most likely is the wire that rubs against something, and insulation is damaged there.
Check all wires from stalk to CEM and fusebox. There to wiper motor and to washer pump.

Are you using the correct amp fuse?

What condition is the washer pump in? It may be a sign that it's coming to the end of its life...?

(When I removed the rear washer pump on my V40 the outer casing fell to pieces and the armitage was welded in place with rust!)

Ive got a 20a fuse, washer pump is new, we thought thought that was the original problem, i have tried also a 25a fuse to see if that will help "give a clue" where the fault is or not blow as easy
