Could be a number of things, temp, slipping, lockup etc.

Can you give more details?
I have an S80 auto D5 with a box thats clinging on for dear life...... it was banging, clunking, etc and I had to do 3 full flushes of oil ( cost me a FORTUNE in oil ) which made it better..... I then had to refurb the solenoids which isn't a 5 min job.

I had the light flash up again the other week but in fairness I was giving it some when it happened - drag racing a mate on an old airstrip.

I bought a spare gearbox for when it eventually just dies.

Also, I bought a cheap ebay VIDA DICE thingy..... £70 I think it was which tells me everything about the volvo's codes and allows basic programming of certain things.
Cheaper than taking it to a dealer.....

All depends on wether you do any towing or a lot of town stop/start driving. Either way I recommend a fluid change every 80,000 miles at least. Earlier if you tow
