Where's the petrol engines?
I was just looking at the latest online brochures for V70's (don't know why?just was!) and noticed that no petrol engine was available. Now this may have been talked about before on this forum, but just thought I'd bring it up. Now I'm not that bothered to be honest, I drive a D3 and am very happy with it, and infact have driven diesels for the last 16 years by choice since my last Volvo, a 2.5 5 pot 850. Now that was a great sounding engine! but the purchase co-incided with a dramatic rise in mileage, so diesel it was, and has always been since, in all our cars.
Now I saw a 850R a few weeks ago that sent me down memory lane to when I was given a lime green one for a few weeks, for a blast around europe chasing some very fast and expensive cars. And when push came to shove, that foul green thing could keep up with everything, and when needs must (and it did! on a number of occasions!) would dance past with us four idiots waving. I thought there was a T6 V70, up until recently. What do the plod use these days? Is there no fast V70 anymore? I'm no speed merchant, i ts all about the MPG these days. But.....its a shame if there wasn't. PS.. If this is true of Volvo, like the lack of R-Design in the line up. Why spend 20 years trying to appeal to a "younger" market, only to kill it? For petrol variants - they weren't selling any in the UK, so they stopped selling them in the UK... In germany they currently offer T4, T5 and T6 models. The T4 was briefly offered in the UK, but I've only ever seen one for sale, once. It is the Ford 1.6 Ecoboost 180bhp engine from the Fiesta ST. Right now there's a transition period as the VEA engines come in. I suspect they're not going to bother reintroducing VEA petrol V70s to this country, but when the V90 comes out next year it might well bring the petrol VEAs to the UK. The current german V70 T5 is the VEA engine - 245bhp, 0-62 6.7s (geartronic) and combined consumption of 44mpg. That's pretty quick, but our expectations have moved on - when the police started using V70 T5s, they were substantially quicker than your average family car. These days, your average family car is sub 10 seconds to 60. |

The other thing the germans get is this rather cool V70 "Black Edition", with gloss black roof rails, tailgate trim, front bumper trim, window surrounds and wheels.

If you want a V70 or XC70 petrol, then you'll have to go to the US or Canada - where diesels don't exist.
Over here the volume of these cars were sold to the business market and the tax benefit in kind legislation made it a no-no for the employee. My last petrol XC was in 2003.. I now drive a 2013 model diesel and it's better with its twin turbo than the LPT in the older car plus nearly 50% more fuel efficient. If you want some vroom then polestar it or one of the less expensive modifications. |

Well, as a V70 Driver, until the D4 came out, no V70 made real sense unless you were a big Volvo fan for BIK purposes.....
I agree with the lack of Petrol option, although I think one option wouldn't be a bad idea - if you do lowish mileage, then you may suffer from DPF issues...... Also, by booting out the petrol versions Volvo lowers their CO2 range further in the UK. Which is an EU target. |

As a low milage, long-term owner, I wanted to buy a petrol V70 (to replace the V70 petrol I'd had from new for 11 years). I bought a D4/163 last year: good car, but I worry about the DPF. For someone like me, who is likely to keep it for a decade, and does few miles, petrol would be best.
The torque is lovely, but I don't like the clatter. |

Petrol would be the safer option for DPF failure issue, and like many reports say, is actually better for the environment on some levels than diesels. |
