There was a debate on why it breakes on the XC70 and not on other Volvo. Perhaps the XC70 springs are just a longer version of the S60 ones without additional thickness, so possibly it develops fatigue cracking, not due to rust.

That is not a picture of my car , it's just one I found on line.
When mine were like that it went over night while the car was parked on the drive so it was noticeable when I pulled away so did not move than a few feet. The second time I had a spring go it went in the same way as the OP's and was several weeks before I found it. |

Ah I see fair enough. only time I've ever done one was the rear passenger side on a 3 series. I didn't even notice, the MOT guy pointed it out. the broken bit was still in there!
I have cut springs before, I had to cable tie the rears in so they didn't fall out when it went up on the ramps lol my MOT guy ummed and ahhed over that one but he let it go in the end |

In fairness under compression/ weight of car they were fine, its just when you jacked the car up.
I did eventually replace them with proper lowering kit so the shorter shock stopped the control arm dropping so low |

if you have yet to replace the spring - please ensure you buy a 37cm compressor kit.
I had to buy a larger set as my Hilka ones were too small (23cm)
