Default B16 clutch fitting

A bit of a prob' with re fitting clutch. Took it off to make shure that there was no extinguisher powder in there and it was clean. Problem is re fitting clutch. The bell housing is in the way and my clutch centering tool can't slip in. To remove the bell housing there are bolts which secure it in Behind the fly wheel.
It looks as though I will need to remove flywheel, fit clutch to it and then re fit flywheel. Am I missing something? I don't have a B16 manual so I can't check. Does anybody have experience of this?

Hi George, if I remember right:

The bellhouse is open to the ground if the cover is removed.
"Trow" in the friction disk and the pressure plate.
Fix it with the 6(?) screws, only 1-2 turns in
It should be still loose.
Use the gearbox with the inputshaft to center the friction disc, really easy if the gearbox is out of the car too.
Forget the tool you have, not useable for a B16
Mount the gearbox with 2 screws onto the bellhousing.
Tighten the 6(?) screws of the pressure plate.
Get of the bearbox
Fix the release fork.
Get the gearbox into the car, and the engine too
Ready to go!

You won't need any special tool.

Good luck, Kay

P.S. I think I have a manual for this kind of clutch, at a pdf too. I will have a closer look this evening.

What's wrong with removing the bell housing and then fit the clutch and then replace the bell housing?

George, pretty sure I sent you the B16 manual as a download. Clutch part maybe part of the B16 Amazon file.
With the gearbox in gear you can turn the rear flange to help mate up the splines. There are no bell housing bolts behind the flywheel.

Ahh so that's why everyone sells those early gearboxes with out the bell housing - I thought they were being tight fisted!

Well it looks like you'll have to get a longer clutch centering tool

Perhaps this helps?
