Default 2017 S90 Front discs and pads

Hi

I have a 2017 S90 with 23000 miles and my dealer says it needs new front discs and pads, I can understand it needs pads but surely the discs should last longer then 23000 miles. Also does anybody know how to change the pads.

Thanks in advance

Vaughan

That does seem a bit premature, but with all due respect, are you a heavy breaker? Our 2016 XC90 had a service at around 23.5k a month or two back, I've just checked the report and front pads were assessed at 55% warn, rears at 65%.

I can understand it needing new pads but unless it has been run too long with completely worn out pads, metal to metal, not the discs. At 20,000 miles my discs are like new.

So I would have a good look at the pads with your own eyes and also the discs. Slight wave formation is normal on discs, but really deep grooves or if they have worn to half their thickness, they need changing. The pads are fine until the warning light comes on the dash or the scraper, whichever is fitted to these cars, makes a noise. If they have 3mm or more meat on them, I'd leave them alone until actually needed, unless the inconvenience of a dealer visit between services is more important than getting the maximum life out of components.

Some dealers are notorious for uplifting invoices by advising completely unnecessary pad and disc changes. Eight times out of ten, they probably get away with it and get another £500+ out of the mug who has the car.

So while you should heed the advice, you should carefully check whether it is valid or just another dealer scam.

1; Just how hard do you brake?
2; 23000 for pads? Really? Are the discs warped, or worn? Shouldn't be worn out!
3; Get a second opinion, either they're taking the **** or, there's something wrong with either the system or the materials. Either way.

The front brake pads and discs should be a very easy job with no special tools required as the electronic parking brake is on rear brake calipers. The fronts will be similar to other large Volvo cars. Look on youtube for videos. Most likely nearest will be V/XC70
If you are doing it yourself I strongly recommend you use original Volvo parts, or use an indy garage and supply the parts yourself but I doubt you will save much,

If you are not mechanically minded and confident to tackle it I would leave it to Volvo or indy, what price safety and peace of mind.

This video is of rear brakes with EPB, ignore the EPB section and the front calipers will be similar but bigger. Part numbers will be different.

I have noticed my 2 local dealers always seem to say you need new discs, when there is a small lip on the disc.
I had new disc recommendations on my last 2 XC60's when they said it needed new pads.

On my XC60 rear pads and discs at 62000. Front pads only at 72000. Usually one can expect 2 sets of pads to one disc. Even on my old high performance Mercedes I got 25000 on pads and 50000 on discs and that wasn’t driven sedately. (Fronts)

My 97 V70 T5 munched front pads every 15k miles but I drove it like the ex Police pursuit car it was, including some track driving at Elvington (I have grown up since then). Even it only needed disks every 3 pad changes (so about 45k for disks).

I am not 100 percent (as it is a lease car and if it is not costing me I pay less attention) but I dont think my XC90 has ever had disks and it is on 63k miles now.
