My trade is a Bosch Master Technician & Technical Trainer. I currently look after training programs in the Middle East for 11 manufacture's, 5 European and 6 Asian Manufactures'. I don't get on here as often as I used to due to work and writing and discussing technical articles on 1 UAS & 1 UK professional subscription based forums. These are technicians who are at the leading edge of their field using the latest equipment and techniques. I have a raft of excellent and very intriguing case studies which have been passed through a number of main dealers before they call in a flying manufacturer. tech. I have been called to remote parts of the world to sort out various high end Embassy staff vehicles that could not be sorted in country.

My advice I post on here is free, or you could go through one of our international remote assistance agents at around $400 per hour plus expense's and Country Taxes.

Whow

I'm stupid to do it for a lot of less than you and your Company in the past.
Thank you for a reason to stop teaching and doing diagnostics immediately.

This world is a strange world

I turned the engine over to restart it and I heard a high pitched whine rather than the expected turn-over noise.
I come into this thread late, but my advice for strangely non-starting Volvos is usually replace the CPS and FPR 'cos they can be aquired cheaply and will need replacing sometime anyway ...

although the symptoms and noises the O.P. reports sound like something physical.
I would therefore remove the starter motor (even though it works in the garage, it did not work when the car first conked out) and peer at the flywheel too.
I would also remove the rocker cover and check all the valves and springs are normal (even though they say you have normal compression)
and then check top-dead-centre is where the cambelt/pistons/valves think it is ... which ties in with a nargled bottom pulley problem.

Did you get this resolved or is it still an ongoing issue?

Well it has been a very long time but it did get fixed last week !!

It turned out it was a pin on the camshaft was broken

The garage guys found it by accident, They had no luck finding a new camshaft but were able to fix it. It then sailed through an MOT and is running just fine again.

I do need to change the rear lenses as one is a bit faded and there is a small crack in one of the front side / indicator lenses. I found those parts and I am fitting them this weekend.

So many thanks to all who posted here with ideas.

I still needs to find some more bits for the car as it has now become a bit of a hobby to get it back to "practical classic" condition.

I will post a new thread here about any parts I am stuck for or any problems I run into

When the new lenses are fitted I will post some pics of the car here (if I can work out how!!)

Again thanks to you all

Thank you.
I did learn something new to me.
First time I did read/noticed about a broken cam pin on a Volvo B2XX engine while running. Broken by a "mechanic" or broken of because of a kind of tune I have seen.
Thank you for reporting this, good luck and live is better with a running volvo , Kay
