Default Are these engines sensitive to oil choice

So, I trust all my servicing work to the mechanic in my village.

Last year I bought the oil and filter for him to do the oil change. i got Castrol Magnatec 10/40 which I understand is the recommended oil but at £24 for 4 litres x 2 (so £48 in total) it works out pretty expensive.

My mechanic buys oil in bulk and I'm sure it would be cheaper for me to use his oil. It will be a quality brand but I won't know what specification it is, I will just have to leave it to him.

So the question is, are these old engines (mines done 112k miles) sensitive to oil spec or are they not too fussy? Shall I let him use whatever he thinks fit?

At least ask your mechanic what oil he's going to pour into your engine. It does matter.
One of the first things I learnt as a motor vehicle apprentice some 50 odd years ago, and it's still true.

OIL IS CHEAPER THAN METAL.

Salut!

It is not just the grade i.e. 10/40 but the specification of the oil that matters. The bulk stuff your garage uses[as long as it's a known brand]should be fine. For example the local Ford dealership has bulk deliveries as well as some delivered in 250L drums, the bulk stuff is Fuchs which is a well respected brand.

By the way I use Triple QX 10/40 from ECP in both the Omega and V70 and have had no problems doing so.

I would supply your own oil unless your mechanic can prove his product can meet ACEA A2 or A3 (A3 for turbocharged engines)

I know you have a petrol engine but be mindful of the oils designed/manufactured for modern DPF engines as some garages, as DippyDog says, buy in bulk and some mechanics, especially of the apprentice variety, will ignore specifications and just go off the grade. Out of curiosity I ran my '03 1.9D S40 on the Fuchs low ash 5w40 for a short time and not only did it have an impact on fuel economy but also noticed after ~ 1000 miles or so that engine noise had significantly increased. Reverted back to the 5w30 Castrol Edge Diesel and all was returned to normal within a few days of driving.

thanks all, I will have a think. So it sounds like correct spec and grade still matters on these engines, despite their age.

Always, in every car I've owned since the Mobil One became widely available in the UK. I even use synthetic oil in the motor mower!

I'm currently using Quantum Platinum Engine Oil 5w40 bought from a local VW indy - which worked out at around £58 for 20L (neighbour and I bought 2 x 20L tubs to get the price down).

Average price for it at the moment is around £20 for 5L - worth shopping around as it does actually noticeably improve petrol consumption, keeps the engine clean on the inside as it is a low ash type and barely darkened after 5K in the V70.

Spec'd as ACEA C3 with long drain intervals

Can you put Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 C3 oil in these, or is that a big no-no? I have heard conflicting stories.
