Smile Reply from Volvo ...

I just received the answer from Volvo Customer Support:

When you start a car, it needs a lot of energy from the battery. Not only to start the car but also for al the other electrical units in the car like radio, running ligths, navigation system, electrical heatings and ventilation systems, carkits, securitysystems, etc.
If you don't drive your car on regular base, the battery will lose capacity very quickly, not only in the winter period but also in warmer periods.
Driving less kilometers and short distances is mortal for a battery. A battery needs the chance to charge itself. This can only be done by driving enough and making longer trips.
If not the battery will never charge completely and you willl always face starting problems. This is nothing new, it has always been like that.
With the winter period coming, especially in freezing temperatures, the battery of a car can loose 50% of its capacity. If then the battery is not charged well, there is not much energy left to start the car.
So in a certain way it is true when your dealer says that you drive not enough with the car. Maybay they didn't express themselves properly.
It seems that your dealer did some tests with the battery and at that time they didn't find anything.

They are asking me to go to the dealer in order to check again the battery but surely they will find nothing and will say the same.
I appreciate your comments very much.

Wow, we will have to hope that the support and advice that you get from your dealer is better than the grammar and spelling that is in the message that they sent you - appalling to see an official statement made showing such poor command of the English language

Sounds like a load of plausable nonsense to me. Your battery should not drain in a matter of days unless it is at the end of it's life or you are inadvertantly drawing a current from it. A friend once had the same problem on a car and it turned out to be a faulty electric ariel.

Looking at a new V60 today and I noticed an item on the speedo/rev counter said battery saving mode in operation! Or words to that effect .Maybe Volvo have been quietly addressing the problem if there was one.

No just had a bit of time on my hands so had a look at what was in stock and noticed the aforementioned plus the fact that a proper speed limiter is fitted to the V60 not just a cruise control. I expect the XC60 will get these mods as time rolls on

I recall the speed limiter that Merc had, it was extremely useful and I often wondered if it would make an appearance in the UK on other cars. I guess it will be a few years before I get another car with it - need to get some of the value out of this one first

Do modern cars ever get give extra features as Daleman has mentioned. Like you do with a Playstation 3, Iphone say etc, added features and tweaks?

Default News about battery ...

I just get the XC60 from service and they said that the problem is solved now. They told me that a new software package has been installed and all my battery problems are finnished. They didn't change the battery. I hope not to have this very annoying issue anymore.

It seems that XC60 it is a car not for short distance driving.
I heard firstly that we can't drive XC60 on short distances due to DPF problem, and now service are telling us that we should "driving enough" (what distance is enough?) to charge the battery.
Maybe in car manual should be determined the minimum distance we should drive every day to get rid of all this problems.
I'm going to bay XC60, but after reading this forum I have doubt if it is a realy good car for town driving.
When I buy XC60 then after 300-800km I have to make a trip about 10-20 minutes to clean DPF filter and charge the battery.
Is there somebody who have a Diesel XC60 and using them on short distances 10-15km per day without any problems (like in normal car)?
Did you notice that all problems are solved the same way - DPF, battery and... - new software is installed?
