Default Bonnet Rubbers

Guys,

I needed to top up the coolant today, but hit on a problem. The bonnet wouldn't release on the off side catch. Why these thing always happen when you have an important meeting to attend I don't know !

I tried pulling, poking the lock from underneath as best I could with a screwdriver to no avail, so in panic mode called the RAC. I then googled the issue and it was suggested to lift the bonnet on that side whilst yanking the release handle, which worked. - So cancelled the RAC as this worked.

It seems to be a common problem on older cars where the rubbers that hold the bonnet up against the catch get squashed and the clasp sits too low in the catch.

Anyone know part numbers to get a replacement set of rubbers

They are still available from Volvo. I recently bought a couple of the flat rubbers that the bonnet hinge rests on when closed and they were about £4 each. I remember when we looked at the parts list the front rubbers are available as the parts chappie thought that was what I wanted.

Thanks for that - at least they sound unusually reasonably priced for a genuine part

I've fixed it for now by adding some sticky backed foam to the pad on that side, and lowering the catch slightly so now it opens without issue (for now )

If you chaps able to obtain the part number that would be super !

My bonnet will only open by pulling the release lever ( which releases the nearside ) then go to the bonnet and lift it 1/4 of an inch, then return to the cabin and pull the lever again - bingo offside then releases.

I spent hours removing the catches, cleaning, lubing, adjusting all to no avail. I put it down to a stretched cross cable ( waiting for aftermarket to come in at half Volvo price ) but replacing the rubbers has got to be a sensible thing to do.

As you say Malc having bonnet issues is a real pain up the butt !

Are these the ones your referring to Bigfella - hinge stop 9444727 and bonnet stop 1372747

When we got our LHD V70 the bonnet latches were misaligned and, like you guys, made for difficult opening. I greased/lubricated the mechanisms, loosened all four lateral screws and opened/closed the bonnet several times and then re-tightened the screws. After that it opened much better but it wasn't until after I lubricated all the moving joints of the bonnet hinges (PTFE spray), opened the bonnet to 90° several times, that the bonnet then began to pop up as expected when pulling the release lever.

On the 850 there are height adjustable rubbers (threaded type) in the bonnet but, unfortunately, on the S/V/C70 it's a different design. There is no part number listed for the mechanism buffer itself (see pic below) and it seems you need to buy the whole mechanism. Shame really as they're probably only pence to buy. I'll keep searching as I could now do with 4 of them. Our old local main dealer was brilliant for items such as these and, when in operation, probably would have had a bag of a 100 thrown on a shelf.

Many thanks Liam

Volvo indeed did some absurd penny pinching things ( all to the detriment of the owner of course ) when moving from the 850 to the V70 and again through the phases of the V70. Oddly IPD have the phase 2 rubbers which I seem to recall are height adjustable which memory tells me are not adjustable on the P1 but like you say are on the 850.

I would suggest that they do need to be adjustable - as all the parts of the bonnet release wear they become hassle for far too many owners, hassle which could probably be avoided for the sake of a few pence !
