1800: P1800e Gearbox connections

Hi

I have pulled the whining gearbox off my P1800e and changed the clutch stuff for good measure.
Now I was going to use a replacement g/box that I got off an ES I parted out.
However .......

The original g/box has a single wire coming from the silver cap at the back of the box, and the P1800ES one does not have this.

However the P1800es one does have a 3 pin connector at the top with the two wire cut out switch.

Before I wrestle this on to the car

1. Anyone know which connector to use
2. Is the P1800 ES version going to give me compatibility problems?

Simon;

Reverse Light Switch of the early Gearbox was a grounding connection from that "silver cap" (which senses rearward position of the Reverse Gear Selector Rod...brilliantly simple!).

The later ES Gearbox likely has plunger type switches for both Reverse and 4th Gear Lockout, located on the cover, whose plungers sense notches in Gear Selector Rods from above.

1. Early and Later versions are electrically, similar, but with a different switch implementation, so a moment with a Multimeter with continuity function, checking what is connected in what gear should clear things up for you.

2. Otherwise, I don't believe there are any mechanical "compatibility problems" from E to ES...

Kay; I only half forget...since it doesn't have anything to do with Reverse or 4th Gear Lockout, I intentionally didn't mention it...what does Gearbox have to do with seatbelts anyway?

Simon, do you mention a M41 without overdrive?
If so:
Contact 1 is power from fuse 8 to the switch. Brown coulored at a P1800ES
Contact 3 os to the reversing lights, white. Interconnect with gearbox in reverse.
Contact 2 is to the seat belt buzzer and warning light. White-red. Nothing in neutral, interconnect at every gear selected.

No problem with the gearbox of a P1800Es into a P1800 if the propshaft flange is the same diameter! You didn't mention the year of production of your P1800E.

And you forgot about the seat belt buzzer s h i t Ron. (Ok, American version only?) Maybe the european Version is with one switch with 3 contacts, interconnected from 1 in reverse and 4th to 3 and 2. A gearbox with overdrive is with two switches.

Hi Ron. This is a really stupid and special Volvo thing. The seat belt buzzer and warning light is on if you forgot to "click" your belt and the car is in gear. If the engine is running and the gearbix is in neutral there is no buzzer and light if you didn't "click" the belt.
First time I did reassemble a pig puzzle in form of P1800ES , dismantled into every part nut and screw, I couldn't believe this crappy wiring map :-)
Long time ago, still the warning light in brain is switched on, seeing a P1800ES only.
Have closer look into the wiring map of a P1800ES.

Great responses everyone.
This is a 71E less than 40K miles, spookily original, with very clean fixings and the original clutch disc.

I am going to wire up the box on the floor and see what the 3 connectors do.
My ES's did not have buzzers etc so never thought of that.


Flange - better look at that too.

Next step is to have the original box with overdrive reconditioned.
Does anyone have a tried and trusted transmission shop.
