Default Front discs aand pads

Hi all v70 d5 185bhp 07. I need to replace my front discs and pads. Is there an easy way to find out what size I need apart from taking off the wheel and measuring them. Its got standard 17" rims if that's any help? Volvo quoted £218 for discs and pads? Are there any other decent makes? I will fit them myself.
Cheers

Most motor factors will select the appropriate size for you if you give them your reg. or year of manufacture and engine size?

HTH,
Brian.

I should imagine 285mm, 305mm, 316mms or 320mms I think any of those sizes have been used on the front of our cars. To be sure, you need to remove a wheel and measure. A previous owner could have used any of the above.

There is an interesting thread here about measuring discs which quickly spiralled away to using the shadow cast by the sun and a stopwatch and compass etc.
Even with the VIN there is no telling what a PO may have done to upgrade.
I changed my fronts at 130k for Mintex at half price. Now at 189k and replaced pads last week due to one n/s caliper slider sticking a bit. The plug seal was missing. Not even half worn apart from that.

It's worth measuring on yours because because people upgrade the brake disc sizes on these all the time.

17's on my 08 S60 are 305mm.

Question

Would a slightly bigger or smaller disc really make a difference? Surely a 15mm size up would still fit or am I missing something?

You're missing the fact that a larger disc would foul against the caliper carrier so on reassembly, the carrier probably won't even fit back on the hub knuckle.
Some calipers can be used with different disc sizes but to do this, the caliper must be mounted on the correct carrier for the disc size.

The 286 to 305 conversion is relatively simple. Only the caliper carriers need changing and a double check that it will fit inside a 16" rim if that's what you are running. Not all 16" are the same.
