You need a VPN, that way big brother won't realise you're searching for new tin foil hats on eBay

And down to the point in layman terms: Your internet connection can be seen. What you're doing can be seen. What you're downloading, looking at, chatting to, can be seen. Your modem has known location, your address. Therefore, if you do something govt doesn't like- they know its you. And not only that, that was extreme example. Take as another example an app called BBC IPlayer. BBC has licence to broadcast iPlayer on uk territory. If you were to take your laptop to, for example, Italy, and try to run iPlayer, your connection will be checked, your location checked, and you'll be informed that this material is not accessible from outside of UK. Same with YouTube (some videos are accessible only in certain countries), Netflix (content per country, for example USA has completeluly different list of movies etc that uk). What VPN does, is it creates a "tunnel" to a point somewhere on earth, typically you can choose where. And your location is seen as that point. So, in that Italy, you can open VPN and tunnel to London. BBC will see you as being in London, access granted. Or, you can tunnel yourself to Thailand, for example, and start downloading via bit torrent. If police wants to talk to you about it, they'll be looking for you in Thailand. In other words, its a good tool for people that don't like when someone peeks over their shoulder. Even if it was invented for different reasons- look that Wikipedia link. Makes it very unpopular with all the governments, police forces and so on. And my point of view- if someone notices you using it (and other systems), he/she may get sudden interest in your activities- you've drawn attention to yourself. This is what I don't like in vpn- some are untrustworthy, so to speak, and will give your details away when asked. Some have only limited usage. And so on and such like. I don't know any trusted VPN, I don't trust the "new Microsoft" aka Google, I don't draw attention. And BigBrother watches.

Good thread, CV boots to VPNs in a few easy steps
Just on the CV boot thing, paying the garage £80 is the correct choice I'd say. I've done a few on various cars in my time, recently a second one on my 850 estate. Utter pain in the backside and I knew the procedure, prepared well and had all the necessary tools. You need a whopper breaker bar (preferably torque wrench) for the hut nut, cir-clip pliers, ball joint splitter or be prepared to dismantle wishbone, potential gearbox oil loss if you can even get the driveshaft out... then the joy of separating the joint itself and seeing if any knuckle skin remains afterwards. Don't believe the Haynes book of lies, they don't separate with a 'sharp tap once the cir-clip is held open' I would say if possible, stump up for a genuine Volvo boot kit (approx. £55!) and ask the garage to fit that. They appear far higher quality than even decent brand £20 from Euro parts ones. I know this because I fitted a (what I thought was a...) decent quality £20 one a year and 4k miles ago for my MOT, and then just replaced it again 'cos it was split. Another half day of my life sweating and swearing on the driveway with deja-vu repeating what I did almost exactly 12 months previous. Speaking to a specialist it seems the quality of rubber in aftermarket parts really isn't what it used to be, so genuine part or repeat the job, lesson learnt but £55 for a boot! Some pics on my thread here if you fancy seeing what's involved: https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=283304 I've never tried one of those cone stretchy ones but did use a glue together one for an MOT pass on my first car many years ago. Presume they've improved since but half the battle is not glueing yourself to it and trying to keep the grease away from the glue. Stretchy ones are interesting though, wouldn't rule those out for a quick fix maybe in future. Cheers, Stu

Hate to spend your money but Stu B's suggestion to pay for Volvo's better boot is a good one. It's sad that the aftermarket hasn't provided something as universal as an axle boot of quality.
Point of clarification: You tossed a cigarette butt into the street and got fined £80? Did a "foot patrolman" write you a ticket of did something come in the post? |

£80 is a fair deal, I'd say. |

Tossed it towards drainage in the street, heard "ekhm, excuse me sir, could you step aside for me, please?" Turned out I had copper woman few metres behind me. Few minutes later I had first occasion to notice that every single approach to Wimbledon station was covered. I wasn't the only one stopped for this, and I haven't seen anyone else stopped for anything else. Easy pickings make statistics.
