Default Rear wheel locking intermittently whe reversing - help pleas

Hi there,

For some time I have been getting an intermittent locking of one of the back wheels when reversing having had the handbrake applied before.

When it happens, I reverse and it can be a meter or so before I feel it lock up and the resistance builds before releasing abruptly.

It does seem to occur only when the handbrake has been applied. And most likely to occur when left overnight or some time.

Anyone had this issue or know what it could be?

Many thanks in adcance

Hi mate, if I were you I’d remove the wheels, caliper and discs and have a good look what’s going on. The handbrake shoes have a habit of delaminating (friction material becoming unbonded from the shoe itself). It’d probably be wise to order a set of handbrake shoes and fitting kit before you get too deep and find yourself without a car to use.

that sounds like your friction material has come away from the hand brake shoes. check now. it can wreck the hub and be expensive if that happens and jams the wheel

as above, I have just had this problem.

the handbrake works inside the rear disks

I left my handbrake on for a week when I went on holiday and it was stuck fast when I got back. I got it free with a good lump of throttle but it delaminated the shoes. I got that fixed but am still having problems so I'm having to have new rear disks.

Thank you. I will get the shoes ordered. You also say fitting kit - is that for the pads?

No, fitting kit of the shoes. So the springs and the adjuster barrel etc.

As another has said, check it ASAP (If not done already). If left alone it can do a fair bit of damage and jam the wheel up in both directions making removal of the drum a really interesting problem.

I would also add that it might be worth ordering a new set of disks as well. In my experience on my cars and customers vehicles (a few years ago now). By the time the shoes have got to the delaminating stage the inside of the drum is in a pretty poor state as well.

Is it use of poor materials by Volvo that causes this delamination?Reason I ask this is that I've run Senators/Monzas/Omegas[which use the same kind of set up] for more than 20yrs and never had this problem nor have I heard of any other owners of such cars having the problem either.Having said that thus far[touch wood] my v70 hasn't presented these symptoms, but quite a few owners seem to have suffered it.

You see I posed this question on another thread... Everyone was banging-on about 'get new shoes, MUST be Volvo' yet its the volvo ones that are failing, thus I asked if anyone had had the foresight/bravery to #cough#not fit#cough# volvo shoes instead and still had or eliminated the issue.
Didn't summon any real response other than someone who had fitted ATE shoes (who make volvo ones anyway) but too recent to comment.

'er indoors ran a Mk IV Fiesta for 17 years and I lost count of the number of brake shoes I had to fit due to delamination. I gave up on genuine Ford and fitted Mintex and any others that I could find from motor factors. No different, they were all as bad. Other than that it was a brilliant car for a Ford. 185,000 mls and engine and running gear still good when the body disappeared into a heap of brown dust.
