40.9 mpg is the best i could achieve
Hi folks
I had to go on an 80+ mile round trip the other day. 40+ each way... I reset the counter before i pulled off of my drive, the journey was from Weeting to the large B&Q t'other side of Norwich. I was specific so that you can see that the majority of the trip was dual carriageway, where i sat at about 69mph on cruise control. I also tickled it twice, once for a few seconds and another for about 1/2 a mile. During the Norwich section, i was very lucky, it was nearly straight-through, stopped once at lights on the way, and missed my junction hence the second tickle lol oh and got lost on the way back (stupid satnav) and ended up going on the A47, damn satnav, always knows best Truth be told, i had Miss Daisy in mind for the purpose of seeing what MPG i could achieve and that was 40.9mpg at the end of the whole journey, I did see 42mpg on the way, but wasnt to last lol Cruise control is far better then me at gaining the best mpg. On a flat straight, the best i could see instantaneous was 44. sommat, so 40mpg makes sense....

I have the exact same car as you, currently sitting at 41.3. Deleting the turbo resonator and a few multi hour motorway trips recently brought me up from high 30s.
Motorways, depending on the gradient are usually in the 50-60 instantaneous. How do you reset the data? I'm doing a 2k road trip in a few weeks, that I'd be keen to do it for. I knew I couldn't be the only one playing the best milage game. My twenty year old self would slap me. |

The turbo resonator pipe is a dog-leg pipe about a foot long with orange seals at either end and is notorious for persistant minor boost leaks and separating completely at the seals (usually at a really inconvenient time - such as when really wanting to accelerate) The aftermarket replacement consists of a simple silicone hose with jubilee clips thats a bit fiddly to replace due to access( at least on the XC) but its a cheap 'fit and forget' solution to leaking seals. They are available on ebay.

You diesel dogs have all the fun.
I make repeated 464 mile minimum runs. It's straight north to the mountains and straight south return on open highways and Interstates. Additional side trips can raise the total mileage to ~700. The last run was 618 miles in rainy weather at reduced speed. The petrol use was 19.373 US gallons yielding a 31.9 mpg. Using the 1 Imperial gal. to 1.2 US gal. equation the UK mileage was 38.28. Once a low pressure system crossed my path giving me a tailwind both ways. That effect yielded 36.5 mpg US or 43.8 mpg Imp. The 5 cyl. engine was 25 years in production and saw multiple improvements. What happened? They merely discontinued it. Makes sense? |

That doesn’t seem too bad for an auto. I’m sad enough to record my mileage and fuel (useful for business mileage claims at work etc.) and over circa 92k miles I’ve averaged 46mpg; nearly all long journeys though as you can see from the mileage between each fuel up. Mine is a manual S60 D5.

I do think mpg readouts are optimistic though. You could probably knock a few mpg off what’s being displayed for that reason.
Yours is a euro 4 engine, which isn’t as good on fuel as the euro 3. 40mpg does seem a bit low though. Its not bad I suppose, but I would have thought it would have done a few mpg more on an 80 mile round trip.

On mine I found it the other way round ie cruise control was less economical than my right foot. 200 mile round trip and it said 47.9. 150 miles were motorway the rest was a roads. However that was a while ago. At the mo its 40.4 but as someone said tyre pressures make a big difference

I used to borrow an S60 D5 a couple of years ago. It was a devil of a job getting the mpg down to single figures, even from a standing start ...
