Leccy car...gotta love that.
Speaking of batteries.

A good service station near me had a customer's early vintage Prius Hybrid for sale. The sale/proprietor/vehicle were all 100% honest and straightforward.

I hemmed and hawed and someone else got it....still kicking myself.

This early example is old enough for its battery packs to be available on the secondary market. The frame (?) would be the used part with all new batteries installed. I recall ~$3,000 for Toyota and ~$1,850 for the reloaded frames. The company behind this , in my region anyway, is Dorman. They've been known for nuts and bolts through the decades but lately have created a large catalog of deep replacement parts.

That Prius would've been a GREAT car with which to gain familiarity with hybrids.

Oh well, you snooze, you lose.

This is the problem I guess and definitely what puts me off, but it's only a matter of time isn't it, they're ironing out kinks and one day soon it'll be demand driving costs down and possibly a few government sanctioned initiatives

My S60 Euro3 is showing 40mpg but that's mixed driving, I haven't reset the reading for about 2000 miles now, combination of short drives to work and longer drives with a towbar bike rack with bikes on.

I do however know I have a leaking intercooler so that probably isn't helping, I must fix that at sometime....

If i left mine over that length of miles, i would be lucky if it was over mid twenties, such fun to drive, for a diesel lol, then mine is an E4 185, and prob a bit heavier to boot...

AFAIK 56-58 in cruise control is the sweet spot.

longish trip last couple of days, 100miles to go camping, got up to about 23mpg with a totally rammed full load and a big lump of tent bag strapped to the roof bars, I was happy with that to be honest (calculated from actual fuel use pump to pump, includes about 80 miles of urban)

used a bit of cruise, but mostly on the pedal at around 70-80. also spent a good 20mins in pretty much stationary traffic on the way back

my longer trip to the lake district next month, I did some maths and it would be approx £40 cheaper total (there and back) if I was getting 30 like a normal petrol car of similar vintage. OR maybe it would be about £10-15 cheaper if I averaged 60mph

I feel like that's more than fair considering the load space and comfort advantages and more than worth it to get there at some point that day

Did a big trip to South Wales over the last couple of days, car is now sat at 43.4MPG average, it's done 600 miles and just under 1/4 of a tank left

It's at times like this that I don't miss my old C70!

I hired a Peugeot 804 many years ago and couldn’t empty the tank from London to liverpool it averaged 60+ and still had half a tank after 400 miles use. I was like Clarkson with everything switched on trying to use the diesel up .

not being funny or anything but I would literally be fuming if I got stuck behind someone doing 50 on a motorway .. if it was an old car which was incapable that's one thing, but come on, be reasonable ..

well there's two other lanes I guess for us whippersnappers but let's not forget, sitting with the lorries all day you're slip streaming a 20(?) tonne brick with a front area of about 4 or 5 square meters, so clearly if you do that your mpg will be crazy.. (it's not much different to saying 'I got a tow home the other day so now my weekly mpg is 250mpg') but then.. did you ever actually reach your destination, or did you get there and say righto, time to go home again.. no, but seriously you do have to weigh efficiency up against a decent ETA

also, each to their own obviously but personally the list of things I would rather do than own a diesel is long and includes things involving my testicles and a rusty bread knife
Jess and I usually been doing at least two trips to Sweden every year (Before Covid) in our 2005 Facelift D5 Geartronic and at the end of the trip it would always be right at 55 mpg.

The newer 08 D5 Euro4 with Polestar is much worse on mileage - lucky if I hit 45.

Interestingly I always feel safe tucked in between semis (as long as I have a decent distance to the one in front of me and the same to the one behind.

Much less stressful than doing 65-70.

But then once upon a time I was a US trucker with several million accident free miles behind me.

Mine is the Euro 4 MY07, it does around 540 to a tank, that equates to around 36mpg (540 / 15gal)'ish, thats mixed driving, i spose if i was on a motorway sat at 55, it should hit the top 40's, but there is no way i could do that, its hard enough sticking to 70

For my car, 70mph = a max of 44mpg**, i cant get any more than that on a flat straight, if i remember correctly it can easily do 50mpg+ some at 55mph.
**Thats with CC on and reading the instantaneous at that time...
