Would i be right in guessing you're restoring/keeping in good condition your late dads VDP Metro?
From Memory, the one on the Metro VDP looks similar. The car is not in bad condition, but I have neglected it the last few years. Too many cars, as well as the VDP Metro is the 1962 Mini, a 1969 Mini, a 1969 Riley Elf, and two 340s, the 340 GL and 340 GLE. The GLE is not at this house, otherwise I'd pinch the non return valve from it.

Thanks, but I'll probably be going over to where the 340 GLE is stored in the next few days, I'll pinch the NRV from that.

I tried a sort of leak test spraying WD40 around the joint between cab and manifold, did not find any leak.

I've lower the level of petrol in the tank now, so could soon try the methylated spirit. Saturday I'll probably get the non return valve from the 340 GLE.

Over the weekend I stole the non return valve from my 340 GLE and put it on the 340 GL. It made no difference. The car still does an occasionally poor idle, although not as bad as when this problem first started.

Meanwhile, I'm getting the level down in the fuel tank.

When a bit lower, I can try the methylated spirit trick.

If I try this will it have an effect on the emissions? I have an MOT coming up soon.

Thanks again to all that have contributed.

Saw this listing on eBay, I have no connection with the sale.

The meths won't effect the emissions except in a positive way if you have condensation in the tank - the condensation will cause poor combustion and misfires resulting in an excessive HC figure, using the meths to emulsify with the condensation so it can burn off will improve the combustion and reduce the HC figure.

That beige 340 is in incredibly good condition!

Thank you, I'll get the tank level down a bit further first. Last year I think the HC figure was pretty good, I'll look it up.

At over 140,000 Miles, last year, CO was 1.64% HC was 115 ppm

They're pretty good figures for a carb engine, , i normally get about 1%CO and about 80-95ppm HC from my 760 which is injection but no cat.

My other beast, injection with cat, i normally see 0.00% CO and 60-80ppmHC.
