when I called the nearest Volvo dealer over 35 miles away there reply almost left me speechless
( It takes the red stuff son ) what can I say
I am planning on doing 2 or maybe 3 drain and fills I would be wary about doing the full flush with the millage then do what ever I have left 4-6 weeks later as buying 20 litres

If the handbook states JWS3309 then you shouldn't go far wrong with the S&A stuff. Your drain and fill is what i call a part-change, i'd suggest the second one 3-4 weeks after the first, third the same and check the condition of it after another 3-4 weeks. It's impossible to assess it for contamination on the dipstick, let it run off onto a plain white tissue/kitchen roll to see what colour it really is and if there are any contaminants in it.

Most auto boxes take ~3L on a part change so you should be good for at least 5 i would think with a 20L tub.

As for the response of that garage, i wouldn't trust them with a wheelbarrow after that!

To be fair, I bet they do a Stirling job on most things, if I follow OP's clues

I was rather teeing you up for your confirmation as you tend to know most stuff, technically
No, there's tons I don't know. I certainly don't know more than I do know.
My gut feeling for anything is that if a specific spec is prescribed and it's available, I'd stick with what's specified.
3309 and 3324 are both available and as near as damn it the same price so I would buy whichever is the official recommendation from Volvo.

We know that the OP lives in Kirkcaldy & it's the closest Volvo Main Dealer, c35 miles away, so just satisfying my mild curiosity.

That model does NOT use jsw3309 it used AW1 (or at least not for U.K. spec 2012).

3309 was for the previous years changing in 2011 part way through.

I don’t know about AW1 and 3309 comparability but 2012 is not 3309.

3309 is a standard viscosity fluid whereas AW1 is a low viscosity fluid. Given the different specifications I would make sure you confirm their compatability

Worth double-checking exactly which box you have before buying the fluid, it's not unknown for a previous handbook to be supplied with the car, sometimes from new, other times because the original was lost.

Also are you sure it's a 6-speed? A 5-speed with lock up torque converter can feel like a 6-speed as the lock-up comes in.

Yes phone Volvo who will confirm.

Personally I go straight to Eastbourne Volvo. They will confirm it is AW1.
