Default Fan noise when recharging-T8

I thought I’d post here as more hybrid users. I’ve just picked up a S60 T8, tonight I’ve noticed the fan on and it’s really quite loud when charging, is this normal and does it do it every time? I didn’t notice first couple of days but today certainly, you can hear it through our internal garage door, through into our kitchen, I’m wait for the neighbours to complain!!!

I’m not sure it’s coincidence but I’ve only connected to Volvo online today, I’ve checked and all preconditioning is off, couldn’t l’ll it be that?

Also, battery max range is 24 miles, is that normal? I’m using the 3 pin cable that comes with the car, with the fan going is it costing lots to run?

All normal. Yes it’s surprisingly loud.

I read about a year ago that, with energy prices as they were at that time, it would cost approx £1.30 for a full charge for a T8

Hmm, thanks for the quick reply but that’s not good, I’m surprised none of the reviews mention that, the cars parked closer to my neighbours windows than mine and in fairness I wouldn’t want that constant noise, it certainly seemed ok yesterday, but with summer and windows open I see hassle for me! I’ll have to bring forward the driveway extension!!

The estimated charge time has passed and still the fan is going and green light flashing, on the app is says battery charging and no time just a dash, the battery charge indicator hasn’t moved in ages, very odd but at some point I’m going to have to pull the out, not fair to leave it on all night.

It carries on for a while after charging to cool down the batteries

I find it loud standing close to it. Behind a double glazed window I can’t hear it at all.

Does yours do this every time you plug it in? Yes with the windows shut you can’t hear it but windows will be open now. I’ve driven last couple of days in electric only mode, I was quite chuffed I used no petrol, only thing I’ve done different. I’ve taken it for a quick drive now in normal mode and left it unplugged and turned off the app, I might have to rethink electric only mode of it’s going to be so loud.

It was very odd, even after changing to full the fan was running then cutting out for 5 seconds then starting again, as you said still running to cool battery. It’s a great car but this I find too loud.

Uhhh definitely this time of year when it’s warmer. Can’t remember whether it does when it’s colder months.

If you’re not going to run it with using any electricity then you have just bought yourself a very thirsty car….

No, I will charge it but try normal hybrid mode, as I ran it on pure electric mode for a couple of days (no engine) maybe that put extra strain on the battery and needed the additional cooling. Thinking about it probably not a good idea run the car in pure mode too long, it’s not a full BEV.

My assessment of pure mode is

- the threshold for which the engine comes on is a bit higher
- air con is turned down

If you’re cutting around in hybrid mode it will use the battery just as much in real world terms.

I tend to drive around in hybrid mode as I find the air con isn’t enough for me in pure mode. Except for this time of year when I drive around with the sun Roof open and in pure mode as tbh I would rather the engine didn’t come on and saved the fuel stopping and starting around town.

No fan noise today after driving in hybrid mode, seems it doesn’t like being used in pure mode for too long. Air con was fine for me, can’t say i even noticed the difference.
