Default XC60 Purchasing Advice

Hi there!

I'm brand new to the forum and hopefully soon to be brand new to the Volvo community

I was hoping to ask some advice on purchasing a used XC60. I've done some searching around the forum and have already found some really helpful information, but was hoping for some input on my specific situation.

With my budget (around £6k), I've narrowed my search down to a couple of cars:

1. 2009 D5 (SE Lux) with c.105,000 miles on the clock

2. 2011 D5 (SE Lux Premium) with c.150,000 miles

Both have full service histories, are automatic and AWD, and have had 2 previous owners.

Does either one of those sound like a much better option than the other?

I'm drawn to the younger age of option 2, but then concerned about the higher mileage - is 150k considered high for XC60s?

FWIW, I'd like to run the car for as long as possible, and I'm pretty finicky about keeping up with servicing. I'd also be arranging for a mechanic to do one of those pre-purchase inspections too - this is the most I'll have ever spent on a car (we were brought up to be pretty frugal), so I want to get it right!

Thanks so much for any help/advice in advance.

If both have been looked after with main dealer servicing I wouldn’t hesitate at either of them, some will say they are just run in😁. The choice is yours, it comes down to how many more toys and gizmos you get extra with the SE Lux Premium (if any)

With any car that's 10-12 years old with over 100K then the condition of the actual car is key. The year and mileage is almost irrelevant.

You need to view each of them (and others) and judge based on what you see (bodywork, wheels and tyres, interior etc). Look at the maintenance records for the vehicles.

At this age is very unlikely they have been dealer serviced for some time. A "full service history" often turns out to be a stamp in the book from Kwik-Fit every 18 months for an oil change.

See what other maintenance has been done. Timing belts (I think due at 108K for the D5 - but check), suspension bushes, shocks, battery etc)

Look at the MOT history online. Repetitive advisories often give a clue on maintenance attitude of previous owner.

When you're happy you've found a good example, then get your mechanic to do checks and confirm.

Check the engines.... the 2009 car might have the earlier 185 BHP lump, the 2011 should have the later twin turbo 212 BHP lump which is more refined, more reliable and more economical. That's not to say the 185 is not good or to be avoided, but the later double blow engines are nicer to drive.

If you go on to totalcarcheck.com and key in the reg numbers, it will tell you the BHP without you having to pay anything.
