Default 940 Estate Headlamp Wipers...

Folks,

I'm sure many of you can point me in the right direction here.

My 1995 940 2.3 Estate has headlamp wipers / washers fitted and just in the last few days, the driver's side headlamp wiper has stopped moving when I wash the windscreen etc.

The headlamp washers still work and the nearside headlamp wiper is still working fine.

Any ideas as to the likely cause?

The headlamp washers come from the front screenwash pump, the nearside headlamp wiper has its own motor as does the offside headlamp wiper so it sounds as if your offside headlamp wiper motor is lazy or something is overloading it. It hasn't been hooked under the stop on the bottom of the headlamp lens has it?

Default Cleaning and greasing

It will probably just be a matter of thoroughly cleaning and greasing moving parts, especially the main shaft coming out of the wiper unit.
An excellent write up of how to dismantle and re-assemble the wiper unit:

The Saab wiper unit is identical to the Volvo ones.

Or you could do what I did and bin the whole lot, saving a few KG of weight and making your windscreen washers work properly as theyll have more power.
The motors on my headlamp wipers were basically rusty bits of scrap when I took them off, was glad to be rid of them.

I got the proper Volvo blanking plates and the front of my car looks a lot better for it now.

That link by Rversteeg is good. There’s also a couple of other “how tos” , one of which is mine, which I’m trying to find. It’s title is 940 Headlamp Wipers. Overhaul?? I’ll try to post a link later.
The motors are mounted on the under edge of the headlamp and the fittings are usually badly corroded but it is NOT necessary to remove the motor to service it. Removing the complete headlamp unit gives access to the motor. The motor cover can then be removed without removing the motor from the headlamp.

Hopefully that’s the link.

I this the one Ian?

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=202838

I keep threatening to do my left headlamp wiper but the "quizzical" expression the car seems to wear has kind of grown on me :

Fairly sure it's just the park switch out of adjustment on it so it seems a lot of work to simply adjust that. They both work at the moment so will probably get left for a while............

Thanks, that's the link in the original post quoted by Ian that now no longer works. Bob

Default Jod T5’s post.

This thread by Jod T5 has very helpful images which helped me enormously.
As I said earlier, I would advise removing the headlamp and leaving the wiper motor attached to the headlamp.

Many thanks Dave. No, the wiper hasn't been hooked under the stop.
