Having just cleaned mine out I can see exactly what you mean Clan. It wasn't quite a square peg in a round hole but it was definitely not a nice fit.
Seems to be going nice now, fingers crossed - I have a 400 mile trip this time next week to see how it goes.

Well, my throttle body was full of gunk from EGR pipe that definitely helped the flap to get stuck (not implying it was for only that - it's from several causes working together). I did the blank myself but they would be relatively cheap to order from ebay.

+1 for the EGR blank. I blanked the EGR then cleaned the throttle body and intake manifold with some petrol then refitted it. Blanking the EGR has given me more power, no smoke at all (Egr was obviously a little faulty) and the car seems generally happier without it. Turbo spools faster and as far as the turbo whistle goes its normal to hear it on these. The turbo's are quite loud and a high pitch noise is expected. It's only when they start to sound like a demented owl you have to worry!

I think I will try the egr blank next - at least if it doesn't work I can remove it and put it back to where it was.
When I removed the TB I noticed that the inlet manifold was full of black oily mess. I got a bit off on a rag but obviously only Mr Tickle could get his hand inside all the way.
It may be worth taking it off and cleaning thoroughly at the same time as EGR blanking - presume a new gasket/seal is recommended when re-fitting the manifold?

Yeah, new gasket is strongly advised. This stuff eats itself onto walls of manifold. Quite an effort to get it all clean.

If you have no-dpf model, I don't see why blanking would not work. 2.0D would otherwise work as it should without EGR. Put a blind to it and disconnect wire connector. Afaik, other engines go into limp mode and throw all kinds of codes on EGR blanking.

Thanks Leo - mine doesn't have a DPF so this would work by the sound of it.

I'm not very well informed regarding the workings of a diesel engine, so my initial reaction was that the EGR valve shouldn't be blanked because it must be there for a reason, and I've been hesitant to do it.

But it seems that others' cars do well (better) without it.

Well, it is there to lower emissions. Other than that, it does not really do anything good.

I've got a pre-DPF V50, I fitted a blanking plate and apart from a warning light, my car was fine. I was having starting issues so I cleaned and modified my throttle body and then fitted a blanking plate. I found my car was running and starting better plus improved economy. I just pressed the read button to lose the warning light. If the warning light bothers you then get a partial blanking plate that lets a reduced a out of gas through to satisfy the sensor, I did this for my MOT so I had not warning lights. I'll be fitting the full plate again as soon as I get chance.

So after removing and cleaning the TB, is it possible to de-grease the vane to the point where it isn't lubricated enough to move freely?
I mention this because since I reassembled the TB,and the car starts 1st time every time now, I have a loud squeaking that appears to be engine related.
I don't think it's a rotational issue because it has squeaked when at a standstill (with engine running).
My fault-finding methodology usually requires an immediate answer to this question - "so what's changed from when there was no squeak to when the squeak became apparent?".
Answer, I cleaned the feckin TB :-)

Default V50 turns over but no accelerator

Hello, I have just bought a 2006 V50 2.0d with 106k on clock. Only had it for 2 weeks but 4 or 5 times now Ive started the engine which turns over but nothing happens when I press the accelerator peddle. If I pump the accelerator it then sometimes kicks in, other times I've turned off and turned on again. On 2 occasions there has been a small amount of smoke from exhaust. Do you think this is the Throttle housing catching? Ive read a few posts but not sure if anyone has the exact same problem as me! Also, doesn't make any difference whether cold/warm start.
Im nervous because Ive just sent back my last V50 (same age etc) to the 2nd hand car carriage I bought it from as it had an intermittent start fault (just wouldn't start first - 3 or 4 times) and senior/master tech at local Volvo dealership couldn't fix it even though had it for solid 3 months! Am I doomed with V50's that don't want to start for me?
