If I pump the accelerator it then sometimes kicks in, other times I've turned off and turned on again. On 2 occasions there has been a small amount of smoke from exhaust. Do you think this is the Throttle housing catching? Ive read a few posts but not sure if anyone has the exact same problem as me! Also, doesn't make any difference whether cold/warm start.
Im nervous because Ive just sent back my last V50 (same age etc) to the 2nd hand car carriage I bought it from as it had an intermittent start fault (just wouldn't start first - 3 or 4 times) and senior/master tech at local Volvo dealership couldn't fix it even though had it for solid 3 months! Am I doomed with V50's that don't want to start for me?
yes i would think it was the throttle flap sticking , the dealer can trim the edge to stop this , even if you put a new throttle on it can still stick without having the modification done ..

Default Does my V50 even have a throttle body?

From the notes Ive read on the forum I think Ive got a sticking throttle flap. Ive just rung a mechanic to see if he can fit me a new Throttle Flap Housing and he says my engine doesn't have a throttle body?? Whaaaat???
2006 2.0D Euro 4? Help
My car starts and turns over at just under 1000 revs but nothing happens when I press the accelerator. Intermittent and no difference if cold or warm start. A little smoke on occasion when finally revs.

Have a word with Tollbar Volvo in Leamington, explain to them what you want. Any dealer worth their salt will help you or try this garage just outside Redditch, they’ve got a few customers with V50’s.

I’d suggest getting the butterfly flap trimmed and get the EGR blanked, that should solve it unless there’s any other underlying issues. My old V50 suffered misstarts due to the EGR jammed open (I believe) and the butterfly flap sticking. It took me an hour to do the modifications to mine and the issues stopped and the car run a treat after that. Once it’s sorted, your motor will be just fine

By the way, it’s good to see another Warks VOC member
